TL; DR
- The iPhone 18 Pro’s India price rose 22% this generation versus just 9% in the US; the Pro Max saw a 20% India hike against an 8% US hike.
- Apple Watch Series 12, Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5 all cost exactly the same in the US as their predecessors, yet all three rose 15-22% in India regardless.
- Every product Apple launched carries a 22-58% premium in India beyond what a fair dollar-to-rupee conversion would suggest, with the iPhone Duo showing the widest gap.
Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event concluded yesterday, and it could have left you with feelings of excitement and joy or disappointment and frustration, based on where you are in the world. For me, the surprise wasn’t iPhone Duo, but the difference between what the company is charging buyers in its native market and the premium Indian users are paying.
There has always been a gap in the company’s pricing across regions, but given that India is one of its fastest-growing markets worldwide, I expected the gap to be narrower. Having tracked these launches for years, this is the first time when the numbers have actually compelled me to sit down and write it out. It doesn’t seem to be about currency conversion anymore.

Start With The Phone Everyone Actually Buys
- In the US, the iPhone 17 Pro arrived at $1,099 in 2025. Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 Pro now costs $1,199, which is a $100 increase over the original price or roughly 9%.
- In India, the iPhone 17 Pro launched at ₹1,34,900 (about $1,418). Now, the iPhone 18 Pro debuts at ₹1,64,900 (about $1,74), which accounts for a jump of ₹30,000 or 22%. The revision is more than double that in the US.
- The Pro Max tells an almost identical story: $1,199 to $1,299 in America, an 8% rise, against ₹1,49,900 climbing to ₹1,79,900 in India, which is a 20% (again, more than double the hike in US).

That is how the iPhone 18 Pro’s price and hike compares to the iPhone 17 Pro. However, looking at it from the dollar-to-rupee conversion is more disappointing. At today’s exchange rate of about ₹95 to one dollar, iPhone 18 Pro’s $1,199 launch price should translate to around ₹1,14,000 on paper, right?
Well, Apple is charging ₹1,64,900 for the handset in the country, which is roughly 45% higher than the converted price, or the price at which the iPhone 18 Pro sells in the US.
| Product | US Launch Price | Fair ₹ Value (at ₹95/$) | Actual India Price | Extra India Premium |
| iPhone 18 Pro | $1,199 | ₹1,13,905 | ₹1,64,900 | +₹50,995 (~45%) |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | $1,299 | ₹1,23,405 | ₹1,79,900 | +₹56,495 (~46%) |
| iPhone Duo | $1,999 | ₹1,89,905 | ₹2,99,900 | +₹1,09,995 (~58%) |
| Watch Series 12 | $399 | ₹37,905 | ₹56,900 | +₹18,995 (~50%) |
| Watch Ultra 4 | $799 | ₹75,905 | ₹1,09,900 | +₹33,995 (~45%) |
| AirPods 5 | $129 | ₹12,255 | ₹14,900 | +₹2,645 (~22%) |

It Gets Worse Once The Chip Stays The Same
The iPhone 18 Pro Max meets the same fate. Its converted Indian pricing is around 46% higher than the US pricing. Apple’s latest iPhone Duo shows the biggest price gap. While the handset costs $1,999 (or about ₹1,90,000) in the US for its base variant with 256GB of storage, it costs ₹2,99,900 in India, which is around 58% higher than the base US price.
And this is after reports about Apple kicking off the iPhone 18 Pro series production in India showed up earlier last month. A similar trend can also be seen across the iPhone accessories. The Apple Watch Series 12 has retained its launch price in the US. However, Apple India sells it for ₹56,900, which is around 50% more than the converted US launch price.

The Watch Ultra 4 and the AirPods 5 are around 45% and 22% more expensive in India.
My Take
India is currently one of Apple’s fastest-growing markets in the world, with local manufacturing capacity increasing every year to serve both export and domestic demand (thanks to Foxconn and Tata). That growth story about the company’s retail and manufacturing success suggests that the company is taking this market seriously. However, the retail pricing this year tells a difference story.
It’s not like India is paying additional tariffs on iPhone, as smartphones and electronics are exempt from the higher tariff list. We’re assembling a fair share of global iPhones productions as well. Reports from earlier this year indicated that nearly one in every four iPhones sold in the world could be manufactured in India by the end of this year.

Does it come down to currency difference? A similar difference existed last year, and still Apple didn’t demand as much premium on its devices as this year. You can refer to the table attached below, and please reach out if there’s any error in it.
| Product | US Launch Price | Fair ₹ Value (at ₹88/$) | Actual India Price | Extra India Premium |
| iPhone 17 | $799 | ₹70,312 | ₹82,900 | +₹12,588 (~18%) |
| iPhone Air | $999 | ₹87,912 | ₹1,19,900 | +₹31,988 (~36%) |
| iPhone 17 Pro | $1,099 | ₹96,712 | ₹1,34,900 | +₹38,188 (~39%) |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | $1,199 | ₹1,05,512 | ₹1,49,900 | +₹44,388 (~42%) |
| Apple Watch SE 3 | $249 | ₹21,912 | ₹25,900 | +₹3,988 (~18%) |
| Apple Watch Series 11 | $399 | ₹35,112 | ₹46,900 | +₹11,788 (~34%) |
| Apple Watch Ultra 3 | $799 | ₹70,312 | ₹89,900 | +₹19,588 (~28%) |
| AirPods Pro 3 | $249 | ₹21,912 | ₹25,900 | +₹3,988 (~18%) |

It could be the memory crisis at play here. However, it could be that Apple is trying to offset costs with higher prices overseas (in markets like India) and protect its US price points. At present, it looks like American sticker prices are relatively restrained when compared to Indian prices. As someone who has always been excited about new iPhone launches and how Apple is scaling production in India, this year’s pricing gap is notable.
Apple deserves credit for doing a phenomenal job with its US pricing strategy. It’s that remarkably compelling US pricing that makes the contrast hard to ignore and leaves me envious of what American buyers get.
