The Toyota Hilux has always had a certain kind of cult status in India. It isn’t the biggest seller, it isn’t for everyone, and it makes absolutely no apologies for being a proper, body-on-frame, go-anywhere pickup truck in a market increasingly obsessed with big cars. That’s exactly what makes it interesting, apart from the mod-friendly appeal that the Hilux brings with it. Now, the next generation is on its way. The new Toyota Hilux was recently launched in Thailand under the Hilux Travo moniker. The same car is expected to make its India debut soon. Leaked photos from what seems to be a TVC shoot have leaked the new Hilux in India, hinting at an imminent launch in the near future.
Toyota Hilux 2027: Design Updates
Up front, the 9th gen Hilux has been modernised quite a bit. However it still seems to make a strong first impression. The headlights are sleeker and more angular than before, with integrated DRLs, and they connect across the front via a prominent front fascia carrying bold “Toyota” lettering, a design language we have seen in other Toyota vehicles as well this year.

The grille has been redesigned with a honeycomb upper section, and the lower portion houses an ADAS module, which also hints at the Hilux coming with ADAS. A metal skid plate, large alloy wheels, and the wide-stance proportions round off an exterior that looks more modern than the generation it replaces. The rear gets updated LED tail lights and a large loading bay with a powered rear door, a significant improvement for those who use the loading bays of their trucks.
In terms of dimensions, the Thailand-spec Hilux Travo measures 5,320 mm in length with a 3,085 mm wheelbase, 225 mm of ground clearance, and a 6.3-metre turning radius. India-spec numbers are expected to be the same.
Toyota Hilux 2027: Interior and Feature Updates
This is where the new Hilux makes a significant leap as compared to the outgoing model. The current-gen model’s cabin is functional and durable as it is, but it felt like it belonged to a previous era. The 9th generation fixes that completely. There is a new 12.3-inch infotainment screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, and a new steering wheel design.

Expected features for the India-spec model include powered seats, JBL sound system, ventilated seats, dual-zone climate control, a Level-2 ADAS suite, auto-dimming IRVM, driving modes, traction modes, dual gloveboxes, and leather upholstery. That’s a significant improvement over the rather less amount of features that we get with the current Toyota Hilux.
Fun fact – The same fascia and interior will also make its way to the next-generation Fortuner SUV.

Toyota Hilux 2027: Engine and Performance Updates
Under the bonnet, Toyota is sticking with what works. The new Hilux will retain its proven 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine producing up to 200 bhp and 500 Nm of torque, likely offered with both manual and automatic gearbox options. Those are strong numbers for the segment, and the engine has already proven itself to be a dependable unit in both the current Hilux and the Fortuner.

What’s new is the addition of a 48V mild hybrid setup, which we already get with the Fortuner. This promises a 10 percent higher fuel efficiency. On a diesel-powered truck that will often be driven loaded or off-road, a 10 percent efficiency improvement isn’t much but any improvement is appreciated.

The Hilux occupies a very specific niche in India — one that doesn’t have many competitors willing to take it on seriously. The Isuzu D-Max is its closest rival, but the Hilux has consistently had the edge in terms of brand desirability and dealer network. The 9th generation, if priced sensibly, should cement that position even further.
