OpenAI has been promising some sort of hardware for a while now, and a new Bloomberg report has now detailed what it actually is. Besides that, the company has also rolled out meaningful updates to its latest AI model, GPT-5.6, for both paid and free ChatGPT users. Both developments happened in the same news cycle, and for me, they point to where OpenAI is headed as a company.

OpenAI’s First Hardware Device: A Doughnut-Shaped Smart Speaker
The most interesting bit about OpenAI’s purported hardware device is that it could be shaped like a doughnut. In the report, its size is mentioned as roughly that of a hockey puck. It could be built from high-quality metal, and, to my surprise, it might not feature a display.
Even so, the device is battery-powered, so users can carry it from one place to another and keep it on their nightstand, kitchen counter, or work desk. The device is also said to ship with a camera system and sensors that feed visual information into the onboard AI.

It could also feature speaker grilles, microphones, and lights that signal when the device is listening, much like the Alexa or Google Home speakers. As far as the pricing is concerned, OpenAI’s first hardware product could be priced between $300 and $400, significantly more than most smart speakers.
As long as we’re talking about the device, it’s worth mentioning that OpenAI describes it as the “physical manifestation of ChatGPT,” which is what makes it even more important. Furthermore, it’s not the only device that the company wants to release in the near future; there could be more devices.

GPT-5.6 Sol Improvements And Free-Tier Expansion
Meanwhile, OpenAI’s software update is the more useful update for most people, as it’s available today. GPT-5.6 Sol has been updated with dynamic response lengths that adjust based on the complexity of the query, improved factual accuracy (about 68% fewer errors), and a new reasoning slider for Plus and Pro users (similar to the effort setting in Claude).
In addition, GPT-5.6 Luna is now the default model for both Free and Go users, with unlimited text chats and a Think button rolling out for deeper reasoning. OpenAI has also added safeguards for users under 18, which include prevention of romantic roleplay, age-restricted content, and self-harm prompts.
