The PPI rat race is over for good and manufacturers have been looking for more innovative and meaningful ways to enhance one of the most important aspects of your smartphone experience – its display.
Looks like the trendy 18:9 displays that debuted with phones like LG G6 and Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ have proved to be quite convincing. These displays appear to be more tall than wide and allow manufacturers to accommodate larger display size without compromising much on one-handed usage.

Do 18:9 aspect ratio screens add any value?
So how much value does this sort of display actually add? We would say it’s more than just tech snake oil. Watching videos on the longer SG S8+ and LG G6 displays certainly feel more appetizing.
Besides, a lot of Video content is already being shot for wider 2:1 (or 18:9) aspect ratio screens and, also, popular content streaming sites like Netflix and Prime Videos already stream content for such wide screens. Moving forward, this trend is going to stick and we will see more content that can adapt to such displays. Even today, the software can efficiently scale videos to fit full screen on 18:9 screens rather nicely.
As mentioned above, another advantage of such displays is that they allow for better one-handed usage since they are narrower than same size 16:9 screens, thus allowing manufacturers to fit in huge displays in not-so-huge phones. Also, the fact that you can fit more on the display also helps while surfing the internet, and during split-screen multitasking (something that we find ourselves using quite often these days).
