The new kid on the smartphone block is Nothing. They’ve managed to generate immense hype around their products with their clever marketing. The company is now gearing up to announce their latest budget smartphones, the Nothing Phone 3a and the Phone 3a Pro. We have seen the design of the product but what’s been missing from the hype train is the use of AI.
Now, AI has been generating a lot of buzz across industries, and the consumer tech space is also seeing its effects. Smartphone brands are striving to ship meaningful AI features on their devices and have achieved some level of success. While brands like Samsung have resorted to using Google Gemini, Nothing has adopted a novel approach.

Thanks to our tipster Shivam Kumar, we have a fair bit of idea on the use of AI on future Nothing Phones. The company’s upcoming Nothing Phone (3a) series features a dedicated physical key to invoke their custom AI, which is housed within an app called “Essential Space.”

This Essential Space is a whole lot different from traditional AI Suite, and is being billed as an “AI-powered hub”—essentially a second, digital memory. It’s designed to capture, process, and remember all those scattered moments of inspiration, reminders, and to-dos that typically get lost in the digital ether. Think screenshots, voice notes, social media saves, photos—all the things we grab throughout the day and then struggle to find later.

The key (pun intended) to this system is the Essential Key, a dedicated physical button located on the right side of the Phone (3a) series. This isn’t just another button; it’s designed for intuitive, one-handed operation:

- Press: Capture and send content directly to Essential Space.
- Long-Press: Record a voice note.
- Double-Tap: Access all saved content in Essential Space.

But the real power lies in the AI behind Essential Space. Some features that Nothing is highlighting are:
- Camera Capture: Within the camera app, a single press of the Essential Key sends the photo to Essential Space, where it’s analyzed and stored for later retrieval.
- Smart Collections: Uses AI for sorting images, audio, and text.
- Smart Collections: AI automatically recognizes and categorizes content (images, audio, text), eliminating the need for manual organization. Imagine screenshots actually being useful again!
- Focused Search: Find exactly what you are looking for.
- Flip to Record: Another way of recording notes.
From what we can gather, Essential Space is still a product in development, and while we will see a version of it debut on the Nothing Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro, a full-fledged, feature-packed version will likely debut with the Nothing Phone (3) later in the year.
