In a non-customary way, Vivo becomes the first smartphone brand to launch an in-display fingerprint sensor phone (at last), the Vivo X20 Plus UD. The Chinese firm takes the lead on the technology by commercially announcing it on their phone prior to Samsung, Apple, and other top OEMs.
Coming back to the device, the Vivo X20 Plus UD is the successor of last year’s X20 Plus. The only difference between the devices is the clean rear panel of the former, whereas the X20 Plus has a fingerprint sensor on the rear.

Vivo X20 Plus UD Features
The Vivo X20 Plus UD flaunts a 6.43-inch Super-AMOLED 18:9 display with the inbuilt fingerprint sensor.
Under the hood, the phone is powered by 1.8GHz octa-core Snapdragon 660 processor and comes with 4GB RAM. It offers a 128GB onboard storage, which can then be expanded up to 256GB via memory card.
In optics, the Vivo X20 Plus UD features a duo of 12MP and 5MP sensor on the rear with f/1.8 aperture lens and LED flash. Whereas for selfies it relies on a 12MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture lens. Other features of the camera include video recording at 30fps, touch focus, face detection, HDR, and panorama.
The Vivo X20 Plus UD comes running in Vivo’s own Funtouch OS based Android Nougat and packs a 3905mAh non-removable battery. Additionally, it offers Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, USB OTG, 3G, and 4G.
How does In-display Fingerprint Sensor Work?
Vivo first unveiled a ready-to-produce smartphone with on display fingerprint sensor at the CES event 2018. There they demonstrated the fully functional phone that can be unlocked from the screen.

The phone, unlike the capacitive fingerprint sensors, has an optical fingerprint sensor built under the display. Vivo flaunts it in the bottom half of the screen where it will be within your thumbs’ reach. Since this is an optical fingerprint sensor (In a crude way, principally similar to the one used at Aadhaar booths to register biometric data) requires the light from your display to scan your fingerprints.
The first impression of the technology showed that the in-display fingerprint sensor has a relatively slower response time – it had an unlock speed of 0.7 sec, which is like 75% slower than the capacitive sensors we see on modern smartphones.
Vivo X20 Plus UD Price and Availability
The Vivo X20 Plus UD will go on sale in China with a price tag of CNY 3,598 (roughly Rs. 36,000). The handset will be available in multiple color options including Black Gold, Champagne Gold, Rose Gold, and Matte Black.
India availability of Vivo X20 Plus UD with optical fingerprint sensor will be soon. There are no official words of the exact date as of now.
