Samsung Expects to Sell More Galaxy Z Fold8 Units Than the Fold8 Ultra

TL; DR
  • A new supply chain report claims Samsung has set a 2.8 million unit production target for the Galaxy Z Fold8 (wide)
  • That’s higher than both the Fold8 Ultra (2 million) and the Flip8 (1.5 million)
  • The move looks tied to Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone, expected in September

Two days out from Galaxy Unpacked on July 22, a supply chain report is claiming something that doesn’t quite fit the usual foldable hierarchy: Samsung wants more of the standard Z Fold8 (wide) built than its own higher-tier Ultra model.

The numbers, per the report: 2.8 million units for the Fold8 Wide, versus 2 million for the Z Fold8 Ultra and 1.5 million for the Z Flip8. Normally the “Ultra” branding would imply the bigger production push, so this ordering is worth pausing.

The obvious read here is Apple. The Fold8 (wide) is the model going up against the rumored iPhone foldable landing in September, and a 2.8 million target reads like Samsung stocking up for a fight it expects to matter.

It’s less about the Fold8 (wide) being the better product and more about which model Samsung thinks needs the inventory when Apple actually shows up in the category.

On the hardware side, nothing here is a surprise so much as a confirmation of what’s already been floating around: a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.5-inch cover screen, and a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chipset. Rumors also point to a 4,800 mAh battery and a 50MP dual rear camera setup, modest camera count for a device in this price bracket.

All of this is still pre-Unpacked chatter sourced from supply chain claims, not anything Samsung has confirmed. Production targets can shift, and “planned units” isn’t the same as “units that will sell.” The 2.8 million figure is a signal of Samsung’s confidence going in, not a guarantee of how the Fold8 lineup actually plays out once pricing and reviews land on July 22.
