Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1, the prequel that steamrolled the box office to become 2025’s highest-grossing Indian film, is finally heading to streaming. The film will land exclusively on Prime Video this week, starting October 31.

But there’s a significant catch: if you’re waiting for the Hindi version, you’ll have to keep waiting.

Where to Stream Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1?

Prime Video confirmed that Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1 will be available to subscribers in India and over 200 countries starting this Friday.

However, the launch only includes the Kannada (original), Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam versions. The Hindi-dubbed version is being held back for a later streaming release, though no specific date has been announced.

This move mirrors a strategy seen with other blockbusters, forcing the massive Hindi-speaking audience to either wait or catch the film in theaters, where it’s still performing well. The news has divided fans on social media, with many eager to rewatch the spectacle at home and others frustrated by the Hindi delay.

Is This Kantara 2?

You might see people searching for a Kantara 2 OTT streaming date, but it’s important to know this article is about Kantara: Chapter 1.

  • Kantara (2022): The original hit film.
  • Kantara: Chapter 1 (2025): This new film, the prequel.
  • Kantara 2: A potential sequel to the 2022 film, which has not been officially announced or released. Most searches for “Kantara 2” are actually looking for this prequel.

Is Kantara: Chapter 1 a hit movie?

To say Kantara: Chapter 1 was a success is an understatement. The film, produced by Hombale Films, became a nationwide phenomenon. The movie officially dethroned Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava to become the highest-grossing Indian film of 2025. Hombale Films reported a worldwide gross of over Rs 809 crore. Trade tracker Sacnilk reported a slightly lower but still massive figure of around Rs 775 crore. Weeks after its release, the film was still pulling in significant audiences, collecting Rs 563.50 crore net in India alone.

What Is ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’ About?

If you missed the first film, this is actually the perfect place to start. Chapter 1 is a prequel to the 2022 hit, Kantara.

Set in the Kadamba dynasty era, the story explores the origins of the Panjurli Daiva, the divine spirit that protects the sacred forests. The film, which was also written and directed by its star, Rishab Shetty, digs into the roots of the Bhuta Kola traditions from coastal Karnataka. It’s an intense story about the clash between power, greed, and nature, praised for its stunning visuals and a powerful musical score by Ajaneesh Loknath.

Kantara: Chapter 1 begins streaming on Prime Video on October 31 in four languages, with an English-language version also reportedly planned for a wider global release later this month.
