In a surprising move, Apple is set to launch a Calculator app for the iPad, a feature that has been notably absent since the device’s inception over 14 years ago. This news comes just ahead of the rumored launch of new iPad models in May, adding an extra layer of anticipation.
The absence of an official Calculator app has been a longstanding point of contention among iPad users, often the subject of jokes and memes on social media. Originally, Steve Jobs decided not to include a calculator app because it was just a scaled-up version of the iPhone counterpart.
MacRumors’ source suggests that the new iPadOS 18 will include this built-in Calculator app, catering to all iPad models compatible with the software update. This is expected to be a highlight of Apple’s annual Developers Conference WWDC, scheduled for June 10th.
Until now, users have had to rely on third-party calculator apps from the App Store, such as PCalc and Calcbot, to fill this gap. Apple executives, when asked about the absence of the feature, would always dodge the question saying a calculator app for the iPad may not be ideal.

Nevertheless, recent reports suggest that macOS 15 will feature a revamped Calculator app, potentially mirroring the functionality of the new iPad app. This integration could bring features like integration with the Notes app, a resizable window, and a sidebar listing recent calculations to the Mac platform.
As Apple gears up for its WWDC keynote, the first beta of iPadOS 18 is expected to be released shortly after the event, with the update set for a wider release in September. This means that most iPad users will not be getting the Calculator app update until September 2024.
