TL; DR
- Android 17 introduces floating app bubbles, enabling seamless multitasking across applications. Enhanced privacy and security features strengthen protection against theft, scams, and data overreach. Gaming and performance improvements optimize foldables, memory usage, and long-session stability.
Google just launched Android 17. Pixel phones get it first, and other eligible devices will follow through 2026. The main upgrade, Gemini Intelligence, arrives on select advanced devices later this summer. Still, Android 17 already brings several practical changes that improve multitasking, gaming, and security. Here are the features that matter.

1. Bubbles turns any app into a floating window
Long-press any app icon to turn it into a small, draggable bubble that floats over your other apps. This works like Facebook Messenger’s old chat bubbles, but now you can use it with any app. On tablets and foldables, bubbles dock into a bar at the bottom of the screen. You can quickly switch between a map, a note, or a sports score without losing your place.
2. Screen Reactions lets you react without a green screen
Android’s screen recording tool now has a new toolbar. The main upgrade is Screen Reactions. With a few taps, you can record your selfie camera and your screen at the same time. This lets you react to a video, app, or website and put your face over the action. You do not need a separate editing app to make reaction content for TikTok or YouTube.
3. Foldable gaming mode finally uses the whole screen
Foldable phones now use a true 50/50 split layout for gaming. The game runs on the top half, and a dynamic on-screen gamepad sits below.
You no longer have to cram everything into one pane. Native controller remapping lets external gamepads work as expected. Google also improved memory management to reduce frame drops during long sessions. This feature is live in Android 17, with more devices getting it soon.
4. Sharing your location and contacts just got more granular
Android 17 adds two important privacy updates. Apps can now get temporary access to your precise location instead of permanent access.

You can also share only specific contacts instead of your whole address book. These small changes help stop apps from asking for more data than they need.

5. A lost phone is harder for a thief to actually use
Find Hub’s Mark as lost feature now lets you lock a missing device with your biometrics. Even if someone gets your passcode, they cannot get past the lock screen or turn off tracking.

Live Threat Detection now flags suspicious apps and scams more effectively, and Advanced Protection mode is stronger. Android 17 puts more focus on stopping theft and malware.
6. PIN guessing gets a lot slower
Google now limits the number of PIN attempts before lockout and increases the wait time between failed tries. This change directly targets shoulder surfing attacks that have affected Android phones in recent years.

7. You can now hide app names on your home screen
A new setting lets you remove text labels from your home screen icons. This gives your phone a cleaner look and makes it harder for others to see which apps you have installed.

8. Parental Controls expand to every Android device
Parental Controls now work on all Android devices, not just a few. This update helps families manage multiple phones and tablets, no matter the price.
9. Under the hood: app memory limits for smoother performance
Android 17 now limits how much RAM each app can use. This backend change stops apps from slowing down your phone or draining your battery. You will not see a setting for this, but you should notice fewer slowdowns over time.
This release includes more features, like a dedicated volume slider for your assistant, expanded dark theme controls, and Pixel-specific extras from the latest Pixel Drop. You can find the full list on Google’s Android 17 page. The June Android Drop covers new features across the rest of the ecosystem.
