TL; DR
  • According to the X account @OnePlusClub, the OnePlus 16 could feature “next-generation Glacier Battery” with a capacity “approaching 9,000 mAh.”
  • Providing a 9,000 mAh battery isn’t theoretically impossible for OnePlus, since the company has already done so with two consumer-grade smartphones.

It has been only a couple of months since the OnePlus 15 broke cover globally, and rumors about its purported successor, the OnePlus 16, have already surfaced online.

Upcoming Android Flagship Could Feature A 9,000 mAh Battery

According to the X account @OnePlusClub, the OnePlus 16 could feature “next-generation Glacier Battery” with a capacity “approaching 9,000 mAh.” If that happens, the company could change flagship smartphones and what buyers expect from their batteries forever.

Recently, OnePlus launched several smartphones, including flagships and mid-rangers, that feature massive batteries. Take the OnePlus 15 (7,300 mAh) and the OnePlus 15R (7,400 mAh) as an example. While the former offers around 10 to 12 hours of screen-on time, the latter maxes out at around 13 hours.

These aren’t your regular, run-of-the-mill battery figures. The Vivo X300 Pro, for instance, offers up to 8 hours of screen-on time, while the iQOO 15 provides up to 11 hours. The Find X9 Pro comes closer with around 10-13 hours of battery life between charges.

While the OnePlus 15 (review) and the OnePlus 15R (review) are available in markets outside China (including India and the United States), the company offers something even better in its native market. I’m talking about the OnePlus Turbo 6 and the Turbo 6V, both of which sport massive 9,000 mAh batteries that support 80W SUPERVOOC wired charging.

We haven’t tested any of the phones yet, but they would undoubtedly raise expectations for battery life through the roof. What I’m trying to say is that providing a 9,000 mAh battery isn’t theoretically impossible for OnePlus, since the company has already done so with two consumer-grade smartphones.

Chinese Smartphones Are Pushing The Boundaries Of Smartphone Battery Technology

Other Chinese companies like Honor are also offering 10,000 mAh smartphones (the Win series). Realme has also tested a 10,001 mAh battery phone recently. The smartphone industry, in general, is moving toward larger batteries, as it is probably the only aspect that hasn’t seen significant improvements in the last few years.

Even so, readers should take this information with a pinch of salt, as it’s slightly difficult to fit larger batteries into flagships (which already have larger motherboards, bigger camera sensors, and other high-quality components).
