Apple launched the iPhone SE 3 in 2020. Now, the brand is gearing up to roll out the next generation iPhone SE in 2024-2025. This time, the iPhone SE 4 is also said to sport an OLED display like other iPhones. However, the change in plan is that tech giant Samsung won’t be going to supply displays for iPhone SE this time. Instead, Chinese display maker BOE will be supplying displays for the iPhone SE 4. Dive in to know what went down behind the scenes.

A report by IT Home (shared by MacRumors) claims that Samsung along with two more display makers put in a bid for iPhone SE 4. Apple had an option to choose from Samsung, BOE, and Tianna to supply OLED panels for the upcoming iPhone SE. The main reason why Samsung has withdrawn its name from negotiations is pricing. Despite having an existing iPhone 14 OLED inventory to use, the deal did not materialize between Samsung and Apple.

Apple wanted the display price to be 20 USD for each panel for iPhone SE 4 which is lower than all the proposed prices. This is because Samsung’s final offer was 30 USD per panel which was still lower than the other two Chinese makers offered, BOE at 35 USD and Tianna at 40 USD, however still higher than what Apple wants.

Apple’s budgetary restrictions proved to be a deal breaker leading to Samsung making its exit from negotiations as it could not match Apple’s price expectations. This led to Apple turning to BOE as an alternate supplier and 2nd largest among bidding giants as far as iPhone SE 4 screen requirements are concerned.

The final deal seems to be closed at 25 USD thereby closing the deal with Apple. The fact to be noted is that the bid price of BOE was higher compared to Samsung Display, but BOE displayed flexibility and adaptability reducing its price below Samsung Display which did fall in line with Apple’s demands.

The reason why Samsung decided to withdraw from supplying displays for the iPhone SE 4 is it looking for more lucrative opportunities. This includes supplying displays for the iPhone 16 Series, and refocusing on high-margin ventures as profit margins will be much higher in displays for the iPhone 16 rather than for the iPhone SE 4. Samsung aims to acquire more profits by grabbing the iPhone series display contract rather than going for a cheaper SE model.

Samsung’s absence from the iPhone SE 4 display contract is a loss for Samsung, but it also showcases on strict restrictions that Apple has for its parts to maintain its budget.

Apple iPhone SE 4 is expected to come with an iPhone 14-like design and feature a 6.1-inch OLED display. It is also said to come with Face ID, a USB-C port, an Action button, and an all-screen that won’t include a Home Button.

Reports claim the iPhone SE 4 will have flat edges and weigh around 172 grams. There will be a dual camera setup at the back, 48MP being the main sensor. iPhone SE 4 is likely to arrive in a midnight variant similar to the iPhone 14.

On the surface, the deal breaker between Samsung and Apple seems to be price point only, but there can be various other factors that come into play.
