TL;DR
- Several reports, citing the X (formerly known as Twitter) user @Jukanlosreve, state that Samsung has decreased the targetted production of its upcoming foldable series.
- Out of the total, the Flip 7 is expected to sell more (at 3 million units), while the more expensive Fold 7 should sell less (at 2 million units).
The Korean tech giant Samsung is gearing up to welcome 2025 with the Galaxy Unpacked event, wherein it could release the Galaxy S25 series. However, amid the pomp and show that the company will put up, it is easy to forget how its recent foldables have struggled to grip the market. However, the reduced target sales for the seventh-generation foldables surely prove the theory.
Samsung Reduces The Combined Production Target For Galaxy Z Fold/Flip 7

Several reports, citing the X (formerly known as Twitter) user @Jukanlosreve, state that Samsung has decreased the targetted production of its upcoming foldable series. For the Galaxy Z Fold 6 (review) and Flip 6 (review), the company placed a target of 8.2 million units.
However, the series didn’t perform as well as the company expected, partly due to the similarities with its predecessor and partly due to the hike in price. Now, the company has revised its target production to 5 million units for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 combined.
Galaxy Z Flip 7 To Remain The More Popular Of The Two Foldables
Out of the total, the Flip 7 is expected to sell more (at 3 million units), while the more expensive Fold 7 should sell less (at 2 million units). Moreover, the pioneer of foldables has reduced the overall production by about 40% for 2025, which signifies how the company is struggling to find a product-market fit.

Renowned analyst Ross Young chipped in on the discussion on X, mentioning how Chinese foldable brands are also expecting muted sales in 2025. These include brands like OnePlus, Xiaomi, Honor, and Huawei, which have recently entered the foldable market with aggressively priced models that compete in both the fold-style and flip-style markets.
The Galaxy S25 Series Could Perform Well, Though

Even though Samsung is preparing for a slowdown in the foldable market, the company is optimistic about the upcoming Galaxy S25 series. When compared to the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung expects to sell around 7% more Galaxy S25 devices.
The total shipment volume for the Galaxy S25 series, including the new Galaxy S25 Slim variant, is around 40.4 million units (globally). Out of these, Samsung has dedicated around 3 million units for the new Slim model that will enter the lineup in 2025. Moreover, it is the regular brick-style smartphone that the giant is betting on.

Are The Companies Waiting For Apple To Save The Market?
An Apple foldable could save the segment, at least for some time. However, for that to happen, the company has to be conscious about not making it the Vision Pro of foldables: a premium device that isn’t accessible to the majority of the audience. For those catching up, the Vision Pro couldn’t do well due to its placement and pricing.
