Google’s decision to an early release of Android 16 has allowed smartphone manufacturers to prepare their next UIs quickly. Xiaomi, Samsung, and many other companies are already working on new user interfaces. Samsung’s prior missteps with the One UI 7 release, marked by significant delays, left many users disappointed. Now, the South Korean tech giant is swiftly turning its attention to One UI 8, and we’ve obtained the first exclusive look at this upcoming software. Currently in its early Alpha stage, the interface, as these initial images reveal, bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor, One UI 7. This new iteration will be built upon the foundation of Android 16, offering the first glimpse into Samsung’s implementation of Google’s latest mobile operating system. Let’s dive into this One UI 8 first look.

First look at Samsung One UI 8

In this exclusive preview, we’ll present our first impressions of One UI 8 and discuss what might change in the near future. Our hands-on experience comes courtesy of an early build installed on a Galaxy Z Fold6 unit. Our initial takeaway? One UI 8, at this stage, appears almost identical to One UI 7. Of course, it’s not surprising that One UI 7 is similar to One UI 8. Samsung has been working on One UI 7 for almost 1.5-2 years.

One UI 8: An Optimization-Focused Interlude?

One UI 8 can actually be seen as an intermediate version that focuses on optimization. The brand has focused a lot on One UI 7 and is still testing stable One UI 7 updates for many models. We know that One UI 7 will be rolled out to more models in the coming days. Users may be surprised to see One UI 8 leaked right after the release of the stable version of One UI 7.

Android 16 Integration with Minor Visual Tweaks

One UI 8 is a user interface based on Android 16. Compared to One UI 7, the new One UI 8 aims to offer the latest Android version with minor changes. We can also think of One UI 8 as a version of One UI 7 that will be visually better in the future. So far, changes have only been seen in some apps, such as Gallery and File Manager.

File Manager

The File Manager app showcases minor but noticeable interface improvements. The “Categories” section has been visually refreshed, presenting a more appealing and organized layout. The primary goal of One UI 8 seems to be addressing any lingering inconsistencies or “rough edges” that couldn’t be fully resolved in One UI 7. It’s worth noting that this early version of One UI 8’s File Manager is currently restricted to devices running Android 16 and above, indicating a dependency on the latest OS framework.

Gallery

We’ve also observed subtle enhancements within the Gallery application, signaling Samsung’s ongoing commitment to refining its core app design. The absence of similar changes in other apps suggests that One UI 8 is still in its nascent stages of development.

We’ve also seen minor changes to the Gallery app, showing that Samsung is taking steps to further improve the interface design. We have yet to see such changes in other apps, suggesting that Samsung’s interface is still in its early stages.

Given the anticipated launch of the Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 with One UI 8, it’s plausible that Samsung intends to release this new software version within the next three months, focusing on these incremental improvements and the underlying optimizations of Android 16.

Now Brief will not be exclusive to the Galaxy S25 series

The “Now Brief” feature, initially exclusive to the Galaxy S25 series, is now slated to arrive on older models with the advent of One UI 8. This functionality analyzes users’ daily routines to provide personalized suggestions. While Samsung initially opted for exclusivity with the S25 lineup, it now appears that Now Brief will see wider availability. We anticipate that flagship devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold6, Galaxy Z Flip6, and other high-end models will gain access to Now Brief through the One UI 8 update. Notably, the current build F956BXXU2CYD7 already includes this feature.

Limited Changes in Early Build, More Potential on the Horizon

At least for now, One UI 8 doesn’t offer any groundbreaking changes. Right now, the interface is in the preliminary development phase, leaving room for more substantial alterations in the coming months. But you shouldn’t expect too much from this interface, and you can think that One UI 7 is combined with Android 16. One UI 7 will undergo minor design changes and will appear under the name One UI 8. Samsung doesn’t want the delay in the release of One UI 7 to be experienced in One UI 8 and is trying to make the new update ready with its full power.
