Intex To Make Reliance Jio 4G Feature Phone; Official Launch in August

Reliance Jio is expected to launch a feature phone with 4G VoLTE support to grant more people access to its 4G exclusive network. Latest reports from ET point out that domestic manufacturer Intex will be the one making it.

The new Reliance Jio Feature phone, which is expected to go official in August, will be priced by Jio with a subsidy model. The new feature phone could cost as low as Rs. 500 to tempt 2G users to directly switch to 4G. Since calling on Reliance Jio is free, this will also have a big impact on other Telecos earning.

This could be a huge disruption in the feature phone market, which is still bigger than the Smartphone market in India with over 400 million users. Jio will also be sourcing its 4G feature phones from other Chinese vendors as well. Earlier reports revealed that Jio has placed an order for 18 to 20 million feature phone units with a few Chinese ODMs.

Other domestic manufacturers like Micromax and Lava are also in talks with Jio for bundled offers on their 4G VoLTE enabled feature phones.

“We will launch this 4G feature phone in this quarter, but will not be selling it standalone in the market. We are in dialogue with Reliance Jio for bundling which should be through very soon,” said Nidhi Markanday, Director and Busniess Head, Intex Technologies.
