OnePlus has announced that its 2016 batch of flagship killers, the 3 and 3T, will also be getting Android P update. The two phones are currently running Android 8.0 Oreo-based Oxygen OS and will bypass Android 8.1 Oreo for the P upgrade. The 3 and 3T will also get security updates for another year until November 2019.

Since OnePlus already confirmed that Android Oreo will be the last major version upgrade for 3 and 3T, the new of Android P upgrade should come off as a pleasant surprise to OnePlus 3/3T users.

“After internal discussions and evaluation, we have decided to focus our development resources on the Android P project instead of upgrading the device to Android 8.1, so we can offer more exciting features and improvements for our OnePlus 3 and 3T users,” explained OnePlus in a forum post.

When will OnePlus 3 and 3T get Android P Update?

The Android P update will first roll out to OnePlus 6 and then to OnePlus 5/5T users. Which is to say, the OnePlus 3/3T users might have to wait a while for their turn. Considering that Android P is yet in preview stages, it could easily take more than 6 months before a stable build is ready for 3 and 3T. However, considering that the Oreo was supposed to be the last major version upgrade, OnePlus 3/3T users aren’t likely to mind the waiting period.

OnePlus has been working closely with Google for Android P, and their current OnePlus 6 is also part of Android P Preview program. With early access to the next Android version, Android P support pre-integrated in new Qualcomm chips, and the new modular Project Treble framework, the updates could roll out faster than anticipated.
