At the Made by Google launch event, the company has launched Tap to Share, a feature that lets two compatible phones exchange contact details, photos, and videos simply by being held close together. For me, the Tap to Share feature represents Android’s answer to Apple’s NameDrop.

Google Tap To Share: Availability & Compatible Devices
Tap to Share is live now on Pixel 6 and newer phones, including the latest Pixel 11 series. Alongside, it is also available on Samsung’s newest foldable trio, which includes the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Fold 8 Ultra, and Flip 8. It’s not like this is an exclusive feature as it’s also coming to other Android smartphones, the broader ecosystem, “by the end of the year.”
Other Android-based manufacturers, including OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, and iQOO could get it later this year.

Google Tap To Share: How The feature Actually Works
To use the Tap To Share feature, users must bring two compatible phones close together. Doing so triggers an instant, two-way exchange, wherein users can choose exactly which contact fields get shared, or opt to only receive the other person’s card without sending their details.
Swapping contact information requires both phones to be unlocked on their home screens though. Sharing photos or videos works through the existing Share Sheet menu, where selecting the option and tapping devices together completes the transfer via a temporary peer-to-peer network.

The feature can be switched off entirely through the Quick Share settings menu for anyone who’d rather not have it active by default. I think the immediate Samsung support here is the more interesting detail than the feature itself. While Google has released the feature for its smartphones, releasing it for Samsung’s foldables show how closely the brands are working together.
