Finally, the Android 10 update is here for Android TV. Yes, months after its premiere, the latest OS update will start rolling out to Smart TVs, digital media players, set-top boxes, and soundbars. Besides the software refresh, Google has introduced a new streaming dongle for developers. Here are the details.

The big change is Android API level 29. Rest, it incorporates the recent performance and security updates made with Android 10 (review). You might not find markedly new visual differences.

Yet, if not for anything else, this brings the latest TLS protocol onboard. TLS 1.3 update means reduced latency, more secure storage with encrypted user data.

Besides these performance improvements, Android 10 has a major focus on critical security areas of the platform.

That all sounds good!  But, the API level improvements might not reflect hardware-wise since manufacturers might take time to roll out updates. Let’s hope Project Treble and Mainland makes a difference.

ADT-3 streaming dongle

Google has shared details about a new streaming dongle named ADT-3. A weird name indeed! Anyhow, the important thing is that it’s meant for developers.

The company conceives this as a platform for the devs to build and test an Android TV app’s compatibility on Android 10 prior to public release.

This pre-certified TV dongle packs a quad-core A53 processor, coupled with 2GB of DDR3 memory and 4Kp60 HDR HDMI 2.1 output.

Interested devs can purchase it in the coming months through an OEM partner.
