The Chinese enthusiast audio brand Moondrop has launched its first Mobile Internet Audio Device (MIAD), or simply put, a smartphone. Although the MIAD01 5G looks slightly different than regular handsets, it represents a drastically different approach than others.

Moondrop MIAD01 5G Is For Audiophiles

Moondrop MIAD01 5G launched

Coming from a company that makes Hi-Fi audio products such as amplifiers, earbuds, and headphones, the MIAD01 5G features the same audio-focused character. Unlike the majority of smartphones available in the market, the MIAD01 5G comes with two headphone jacks.

While the smartphone features a 3.5mm unbalanced jack with 2VRMS output, it also comes with a 4.4mm balanced audio jac with 4VRMS output. Thanks to the higher power output, the smartphone can easily handle high-quality headphones, such as in-ear monitors, and relay audio to longer headphone cables.

Another audio-centric feature of the Moondrop smartphone is the presence of the dual Cirrus Logic MasterHiFi DACs. The digital-to-analog converters have a six-layer audio circuit with a gold coating. They also have an independent LDO power supply, which supports a dynamic range of up to 132 dB and a signal-to-noise ratio of 117 dB.

Last but not least, the phone supports 100-level digital volume controls. The Moondrop Audio Center Software lets users control all the audio features, bringing support for spatial audio. While these are the features for audiophiles, let’s explore the MIAD01 5G’s specifications.

The Moondrop smartphone has a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 2460 x 1080 resolution. It also features 1920Hz high-frequency PWM dimming. Under the hood, the phone features a Dimensity 7050 SoC with 12GB LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

Regarding optics, the phone has a 64MP primary camera and an 8MP secondary sensor. On the front, there’s a 32MP selfie shooter. Powering the smartphone is a 5,000 mAh battery that supports 33W PD charging via a USB-C cable. The battery is rated to last for 27 hours on a single charge.

Other features on the smartphone include dual speakers, dual headphone jacks, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and support for SBC/AAC/LDAC codecs. Out of the box, the handset runs on Android 13 and provides 5G connectivity.

Does The MIAD01 5G Come With A Google Play Store?

Moondrop MIAD01 5G with Google-free Android

Consider this a boon or a curse: The Moondrop smartphone lacks a Google Mobile Services certification. In other words, it doesn’t support the Google Play Store or other Google apps like Gmail, Chrome, Maps, Messages, and more. Although this appears to be a significant downside, the company uses this as a selling point.

Moondrop argues that the absence of Google’s services implies that the phone can’t be used to track users’ data. If you haven’t heard this already, a few companies sell Google-free Android smartphones, and MIAD01 5G is one of them. However, those who want to use the Play Store can do it manually after purchasing the phone.

MIAD01 5G Price

The Moondrop MIAD01 5G costs $399, which is about Rs. 33,000. At the price, the smartphone does offer some impressive specifications. However, it is not a phone for everyone. Yes, audiophiles or professionals wanting access to high-fidelity can indeed consider spending on a smartphone.
