2

Apparently, two is better than one; at least in the Smartphone land. After dual cameras becoming a smartphone staple, we are beginning to see phones with two displays gaining traction. That isn’t to say that dual screen phones are anything new. There have been phones in the past, including Smart Flip phones and Yota phones, that are well known for using that extra display panel. However, With the improvement in display technology and with chipsets getting more battery friendly, we expect that more and more manufacturers will be comfortable using an extra display on a phone moving forward. Let’s take a look at a few existing and relevant dual screen phone options.

Meizu Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus

Meizu Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus launched recently are mid-range phones that have dual cameras and dual screen. Thanks to slim AMOLED Panels, Meizu has still managed to limit the overall thickness to 7.3mm and to retain reasonable capacity batteries.

The second screen on the Meizu Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus is mounted on the rear and can be used to capture selfies using rear cameras. It also relays weather, location and time information.

Yota3

Yotaphone that places the dual screen concept at the core of its existence recently launched its third generation model Yota3.

Yota phones have big e-ink displays on the rear, the same kind as you’ll find on Amazon Kindle lineup. The Yota 3 is 7.9 mm thick, weighs 179 grams, is powered by Snapdragon 625 processor with 4GB RAM, has a 5.5-inch full HD AMOLED display on the front and a 5.2-inch HD E-ink display on the rear.

LG V20

LG’s V-series was perhaps the first one to bring dual screens to contemporary mainstream phones. The secondary ticker display on the phone is used for showing quick settings in the foreground and also to add more information regarding the content on the main screen.

Every year, LG is getting better with its ticker display implementation and the one used on the LG V20 doesn’t feel like a gimmick. You can access quick setting tools, app shortcuts, recent apps for fast multitasking, music controls and more directly from the second display. You can also manually add contacts to it.

Works pretty much as it does on LG V20.
