TL; DR
  • Apple sent its largest spyware alert batch yet on August 13, reaching users in 110 countries.
  • For the first time, the warning appeared directly on the iPhone Lock Screen.
  • Apple recommends enabling Lockdown Mode and updating iOS if you receive the alert.

Apple just pushed out its biggest-ever batch of mercenary spyware threat notifications on August 13, 2026, reaching targeted iPhone users across 110 countries. This is the first time such a warning has appeared directly on the Lock Screen rather than staying tucked away in email or account settings.

What The Notification Actually Means

The alert reads: “Apple detected a mercenary spyware attack targeted at your iPhone. There are actions you can take now to help protect your data and device.” The company has floated such warnings periodically since 2021, and while it doesn’t name the particular spyware behind any alert, it has previously pointed to NSO Group’s Pegasus as a well-documented example of this category of attack.

Apple recommends enabling Lockdown Mode. For those catching up, it’s a feature that sharply restricts message attachments, web browsing functionality, and incoming connection requests. The idea is to reduce the phone’s overall attack surface (the mediums through which the user might be attacked).

Beyond that, users are advised to install the latest iOS version immediately, remove unfamiliar configuration profiles, and seek assistance from a digital security organization if they suspect they’re a genuine target rather than a false positive.

These attacks are typically expensive and narrowly targeted, aimed at high-profile individuals like journalists, activists, and public figures rather than the general public. Apple explicitly states that the vast majority of users will never receive one.

I think moving this alert onto the Lock Screen is a meaningful shift in how seriously Apple wants users to treat it. While a notification buried in Settings is easy to overlook, one that greets you the moment you pick up your phone is much harder to dismiss.
