Google’s Android 15 was launched in September 2024, and the development timeline has accelerated since last week when the company revealed its intention to release Android 16 sooner than anticipated. Google has stated that Android 16 is set to be released in the second quarter of 2025, which is earlier than the typical Q3 launches we have come to expect. However, there remains some uncertainty regarding the specific release date for Android 16, with questions about whether it will debut in April or June. While Google has not officially confirmed the date, a recent report suggests a potential timeline for the rollout of Android 16.

Android 16 Rollout date tipped

Android 16 is expected to be released on June 3rd, according to a report from Android Headlines. Earlier this year, Google launched Android 15 to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) on September 3rd, with the rollout for Pixel Phones commencing on October 15th.
This time, in contrast to the previous two-phase rollout, the report indicates that Android 16 will be released simultaneously for ASOP and Pixel devices on June 3rd. The primary objective is to integrate the code into ASOP, enabling OEMs to commit to the software that will be included in phones set to launch in 2025. An added benefit is the immediate availability for Pixel users.

The June launch also suggests that devices scheduled for release in July, August, and September will come equipped with Android 16. Furthermore, this timeline allows Google to implement a smaller update later in 2025, with the shift back to point updates aimed at enhancing AI capabilities. This strategy will enable quicker deployment of changes to developers, allowing OEMs to swiftly leverage new AI features.
The introduction of Android 16 will result in a shortened lifespan for Android 15, as it is expected to last less than eight months in the market. At this stage, the release date appears to be more of a goal than a certainty, particularly since we have not received confirmation from additional sources. The anticipated timeline is aligned with the end of Q2, which coincides with Google’s strategy; however, the availability of Pixel devices remains uncertain, and these plans could be subject to change in 2025.
