TL; DR

  • Xiaomi to replace GetApps with Indus Appstore & PhonePe on all devices in India by January 2025.
  • This transition will happen automatically.
  • GetApps team will continue working with the Indus Appstore to provide updates and support.

Xiaomi, infamous for its intrusive ads, is making a major change for its Indian users. Starting January 2025, all Xiaomi, Redmi, and Poco devices in India will replace the pre-installed GetApps store with the Indus Appstore, in partnership with PhonePe.

This change will affect all devices with GetApps, currently only removable by switching the region to the US. While Indus Appstore promises regional support and integration with PhonePe for payments, concerns remain.

Xiaomi’s history of embedding ads into its system apps has users worried about whether this new appstore will include similar issues. If ads are present and the app is uninstallable, it could be a great move. However, if only the former is true, this is bad news.

The transition will happen automatically via system updates, leaving users with no choice. However, it’s unclear if the new app will be disable-friendly, if not uninstallable. While the idea of replacing GetApps is exciting, it should be completely removed from the phone since we already have the Google Play Store.

What’s your take on this? Will this move improve Xiaomi’s reputation or add to the frustration? Share your thoughts.
