PhonePe app has now launched a new feature that would allow users to activate UPI using authentication based on Aadhaar number. With this upgrade, the Aadhaar number will be integrated into the PhonePe App’s e-KYC process to initiate the UPI registration. Previously, the Flipkart-backed UPI platform required users’ debit cards to activate the PhonePe UPI in the app.
UPI has gradually become one of the leading methods for digital payment in India and among different UPI apps, PhonePe is undoubtedly the market leader. According to National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) data, PhonePe UPI enjoys the majority of market share on the basis of customer transactions count as well as value.

How to activate PhonePe UPI using Aadhaar

- Install PhonePe app from Google Play Store on Android and AppStore on iPhones.
- Launch the PhonePe app on your smartphone and create an account with a mobile number registered with your bank.
- Go to the Profile Page by clicking on the top-left section.
- Select the Add Bank Account option under the Payment Instruments tab.
- Choose the bank and the bank, and then use OTP authentication to confirm the connected phone number. With this, PhonePe will collect the information for your bank account and attach it to UPI.
- Go to the section where you set up the UPI now. You will be given the option to select either an Aadhaar Card or a Debit Card at this point. Choose an Aadhaar card.
- Enter the last six digits of your Aadhaar number
- Provide the OTP received on the linked mobile number to verify the process and set up a UPI PIN.
