WhatsApp to Get Its Own Digital Payment Feature: This Is How It Will Work

Lately, WhatsApp has been at the center of the discussion with its back to back updates. After introducing “Live Location sharing” and “Delete For Everyone” feature, the instant messenger is back in the news with another update called the WhatsApp ‘Pay’.

The feature will allow users to make digital transactions to their contacts from within the WhatsApp app itself. The ‘Pay’ feature is in its final stage of development, and as reported by Factor Daily, WhatsApp “likely to do some sort of an extended beta program for the feature in November and by December you can expect a full rollout.”

The same source also revealed that the WhatsApp ‘Pay’ will get support from the three leading banks in India – State Bank of India, ICICI and HDFC Bank – for its payment feature. However, no confirmation came from either banks or WhatsApp on this.

If the reports are true and WhatsApp will roll-out the ‘Pay’ update, it is likely that the other Indian digital payment apps will be in for some really tough competition. The messaging app is used more than a billion users worldwide and the e-payment feature is only the missing thing in its wide infantry.

How will WhatsApp payment feature work?

The WhatsApp payment feature will be ingrained in your app, which means you don’t have to leave your chat interface to make payments. The feature will work the same way you share your files, documents and location with your contacts.

Going by the reports, there will be a separate option for payment – thumbnailed inside the attachment icon. Tapping on that thumbnail will redirect you to a screen where you will be asked to enter the amount and provide personal identification number. Click on send and your payment will be sent.

The receiver will then have an option to either accept or reject the payment. This is everything that is known about the feature as of now. The user will definitely have to link their bank account details to WhatsApp to initiate the payment process.

Make Payments to Businesses

With WhatsApp business already in its preliminary stages, it will also be possible for businesses to directly accept payment from consumers. For instance, you will be able to directly book tickets on BookMyShow from WhatsApp.
