TL; DR
  • Suzuki’s 1.2L turbo prototype targets 126hp and 230Nm on E100, CNG, or CBG.
  • Suzuki also showed a series hybrid and a 1.5L turbo making 160hp.
  • India availability is unconfirmed, though the engine may suit sub-4m cars.

The Japanese automaker Suzuki has set some targets for the engines it plans to build over the next decade, and one of them could actually end up in an Indian car. I’m talking about the 1.2-liter direct-injection turbo-petrol prototype engine that targets 126hp of peak power and 230Nm of peak torque. It is also compatible with up to 100% ethanol, CNG and CBG.

What Suzuki Has Actually Shown

These engines are part of the company’s “Technology Strategy 2026: Looking 10 Years Ahead” product strategy. Japan’s MotorFan says the turbo is based on the Z12E NA petrol engine. For those catching up, this is a three-cylinder 1.2-liter engine already in the Swift, Baleno and Dzire.

On top of the underlying structure, Suzuki has added a variable-geometry turbo and a water-cooled intercooler. The automaker targets up to 40% thermal efficiency at launch and 50% by 2035. Now, here’s the more interesting part. The company itself hasn’t confirmed India to be on the roadmap for the engine. However, from what I’m seeing, the engine could power cars like the Fronx or even the Brezza.

Beyond The Turbo: Hybrids And A Bigger Engine

Suzuki also showed a series-hybrid version of the same Z12E engine, where it generates electricity to power a motor, which in turn drives the wheels. Paired with the turbo in a plug-in, total output could reach 177hp. Then there’s a 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo petrol engine, which, while also being compatible with E100, CNG and CBG, targets 160 hp and 280 Nm. Clearly, this sort of power and torque suits bigger cars more than sub-4-meter SUVs.

A 0.66-liter engine for Japanese kei cars rounds out the reveal. Every engine shown is transverse and front-wheel drive, so rear-drive units for models like the Jimny will come later.

In a market still debating ethanol blends, Suzuki is designing for fuel flexibility first and power second. That suggests it expects several fuels to coexist in India.
