TL;DR
  • Sonos 27 launches September 8 with AI.
  • ChatGPT integration enables voice-controlled music.
  • Beam Ultra and Ace Ultra arrive September 29.

Sonos wants to put its 2024 software problems behind it. With Sonos 27, the company is shifting from a closed system to an open platform. Sonos is also rolling out two new flagship products: the Beam Ultra soundbar and Ace Ultra headphones. The Sonos Play portable speaker will launch in India on September 8th.

An Open Approach to AI Control

Sonos 27 puts flexibility with artificial intelligence at the center. Instead of locking users into one assistant, Sonos is opening up its platform.

The update adds Sonos 27mcp, an early access feature that lets the system connect to outside AI models like ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Now, I can ask an AI on my phone or computer to play music in any room, without leaving my current chat.

“The smartest home isn’t run by one do-everything assistant, it’s run by people having the ability to pick – or create – the right agent for each job,” said Nick Millington, Chief Innovation Officer at Sonos. “That’s what Sonos’ open platform gives you.”

Sonos is also showing off Sonos Custom Agents, a feature coming in 2027. It will let me build my own agents with different voices and personalities, like a detective reading the news or a coach for my morning routine. Sonos 27voice, the company’s own assistant for music and mood, will be available as an opt-in early access feature this fall.

Sonos Fabric: Sound That Moves With You

Sonos 27 brings hardware and software together with Sonos Fabric. Devices can now sense each other and adjust on their own.

Two key features headline this shift:

  • Headphone Linking: The new Sonos Ace Ultra headphones work closely with the home system. I can move audio between the headphones and nearby speakers with one button, so I can take a song from the living room to my ears as I head out
  • Portable Surrounds: Compatible speakers like the Sonos Play or Move 2 now use high-frequency sound to sense where they are. If I put them behind me, they become rear surround channels for my home theater, no app setup needed.

A Redesigned App Experience

The Sonos app has always been a pain point. Now, it’s getting a major redesign. Sonos says the new look comes from feedback by the Sonos community, including the subreddit.

The new interface adds a bottom tab bar for Home, System, and Search, making it easier to get around. The standout feature is a virtual volume knob. I can pinch and rotate with two fingers on the screen to adjust the volume, just like turning a real knob. The new navigation starts rolling out September 8th on mobile, and the virtual knob will be iOS-only at first.

Hardware Refresh: Beam Ultra and Ace Ultra

The software is launching alongside two new pieces of hardware that are designed to showcase the new platform.

The Beam Ultra is a new compact soundbar, moving from a 5.0 system to a full 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup with two up-firing drivers. It has a new waveguide and four levels of AI speech enhancement for clearer sound. Price is $699 (India price to be announced closer to the launch in the country).

The Ace Ultra headphones are Sonos’s second try at premium audio, this time focusing on working better with the rest of the system. They use Headphone Engine 2 for stronger noise cancellation, which Sonos says is twice as good at blocking low-frequency hums like airplane engines. Battery life is up to 35 hours with noise canceling on. They support aptX Adaptive Lossless over Bluetooth and come in black, white, agave blue, and sand beige. Price is $449. (India price to be announced closer to the launch in the country)

Both products will be available for purchase on September 29th in select markets.

Availability

The Sonos 27 update, with the new app and portable surrounds, starts rolling out to everyone on September 8th. Sonos 27mcp and headphone linking will launch at the same time as Early Access features. Sonos is taking a more careful approach after the backlash from the last app update.

The Sonos Play speaker, which serves as the versatile hub for many of these new features, will hit the Indian market on September 8th.

Sonos 27 is a clear bet on interoperability over closed systems. By letting third-party AIs like ChatGPT control the system and adding agents for specific tasks, Sonos wants to be the neutral hardware layer for the AI era. The Early Access rollout shows Sonos has learned from past mistakes. The community is both its biggest asset and its toughest critic.
