In July, Acer launched its Aspire 3D Spatiallabs laptop with a special ability: it can convert 2D content into immersive 3D spectacles. It’s not as seamless as it sounds, but the laptop works, which is quite impressive. Now, the Korean tech giant Samsung has forayed into the market with a new gaming monitor that converts 2D visuals into glass-free 3D. Showcased at Gamescom 2024, the Odyssey 3D Gaming Monitor features Eye Tracking and View Mapping technology. Here are more details about the new 3D gaming monitor by Samsung.

Samsung Odyssey 3D Gaming Monitor Key Features

First and foremost, the monitor is available in two sizes: 27 inches and 37 inches. The monitor features an innovative light field display (LFD) technology that creates lifelike 3D images (from 2D content). It uses a lenticular lens on the front panel. For those catching up, a lenticular lens consists of an array of lenses that reveal different parts of an image from various angles.

With the lenticular lens, the monitor should be able to show different images to each eye, which adds depth to 2D content. As mentioned in the starting, the Acer SpatialLabs laptops and monitors also feature the same technology. Even though this is a novel concept and it works fantastically, the generated 3D image can only be viewed by one person at a time.

Combined with the Eye Tracking and View Mapping technology, the monitor can optimize a 3D experience for every user without the need to wear 3D glasses (like we do in the movies). While the former monitors the movement of a viewer’s eyes (with a built-in stereo camera), the latter adjusts the image’s relative position to the viewer for enhanced depth perception.

Users can switch the Odyssey 3D monitor between regular (2D) and 3D modes. For those wondering, the monitor features a 3K resolution, a 1ms gray-to-gray response time, and a refresh rate of up to 165Hz, which makes it suitable for gamers. Other features include a Height Adjustment Stand (HAS), tilt capabilities, FreeSync Premium, one DisplayPort 1.4, and two HDMI 2.1 ports.

Samsung Odyssey 3D Gaming Monitor Price And Availability

Ultimately, the Odyssey 3D Gaming Monitor is for professionals or enthusiasts. We can see a 3D designer using the monitor to visualize certain concepts or a professional gamer spending some time in the 3D mode. However, it isn’t for the day-to-day users. Hence, expect the gaming monitor to arrive with a premium price tag. Samsung hasn’t announced the product in India, but there’s a chance that it will arrive in the country soon. Regarding price, the Samsung Odyssey 3D Gaming Monitor will command the flagship category, and hence, a flagship price.
