Samsung has launched the Galaxy M17 5G in India, a budget device whose most significant feature may not be its hardware, but a software promise. The company is committing to six major Android updates and six years of security patches for the phone, a level of support that is almost unheard of in its ₹12,499 price segment.

This focus on longevity, combined with features like a 90Hz AMOLED display and an optically stabilized camera, places immediate pressure on competitors in the crowded budget market.

Display and Design

The Galaxy M17 5G features a 6.7-inch Full HD+ AMOLED panel with a 90Hz refresh rate. For protection, it uses Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, a specification typically found on more expensive phones. The design is standard for Samsung’s budget line, with a flat frame and a notched “Infinity-V” display.

Performance

The device is powered by the Exynos 1330, a 5nm chipset from 2023 designed for efficiency in everyday use. It is available in 4GB, 6GB, and 8GB RAM configurations, all with 128GB of internal storage. The hardware should be sufficient for routine tasks and some light gaming.

Camera System

The rear camera system is housed in a clean, pill-shaped module. It includes a 50MP main sensor with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), which helps reduce blur from hand shake. This is complemented by a 5MP ultra-wide lens and a 2MP macro lens. The front-facing camera is 13MP.

Software Support and Battery

The phone’s main differentiator is its software support policy. Promising six years of Android version and security updates extends the M17 5G’s useful lifespan far beyond most of its rivals. This could be a significant factor for buyers who want a device that remains secure and up-to-date for years.

A 5,000mAh battery powers the phone, with support for 25W fast charging. It also has an IP54 rating for splash resistance.

Price and Availability

The Samsung Galaxy M17 5G will be available in India starting October 13 for ₹12,499 (approx. $140). With its combination of a quality display, OIS, and an industry-leading update policy, the Galaxy M17 5G makes a strong case for being one of the best long-term values in the budget market.
