Return of Samsung Galaxy Fold with spen and 8-inch display

Samsung Galaxy Fold launch was shelved back in April due to issues with its display. Thus, unfortunately, the first-gen Fold didn’t see the daylight. However, now reports are hinting of its successor. A Korean news source suggests it could sport an 8-inch display and wield an S-pen just like Galaxy Note 9 (review). According to reports, the company is in talks with suppliers to source the S Pen components.

Another report reveals that the Galaxy Fold has received 5G certification from the FCC (Federal Communication Commission). It has apparently cleared the EMC (Electromagnetic compatibility) testing, which assures its electromagnetic emission is within safety limits.

There are rumors surrounding the new design choice Samsung could take with the second iteration. It might don a clamshell structure (vertical folding) like the forthcoming Moto Razr foldable phone. The same Korean source claims that the production could start in November, with the official launch slated for the first half of 2020.

This would definitely pique the interest among enthusiasts. However, it would be a mountainous task to attract trust and confidence of the public on its foldable phone. Heaven knows, maybe second time’s the charm for the South Korean giant. All that considered, Galaxy Fold, the first generation one had the potential of a powerful multitasker.

Samsung Galaxy Fold: A quick refresh

Samsung Galaxy Fold features a dual display called Infinity Flex Display. The one on the periphery is a 4.6-inch HD+ Super AMOLED screen with an aspect ratio of 21:9. Unfold the device like a book to see its 7.3-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED display having an aspect ratio of 4.2:3.

Rest of the Galaxy Fold specs-sheet includes a Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC backed by humongous 12GB of RAM and 512GB storage. You could harness its 6 cameras (three on either side) for capturing photos and videos.

The company is yet to make any official confirmation. Until such statement surfaces, we would recommend taking the new scoops with a grain of salt. We would be closely examining the progress of other foldable phones such as the ill-fated Huawei’s Mate X (review).
