Samsung 50MP ISOCELL GN1 with dual-pixel autofocus announced

0

Make way for Samsung ISOCELL GN1, the newly unveiled 50MP camera sensor. This is the brand’s first sensor to support both dual-pixel autofocus and Tetracell 4-in1 pixel binning.

Let’s have a look at this new sensor from the Samsung foundry.

Samsung ISOCELL GN1 Specs

ISOCELL GN1 sensor is 1/1.3-inch in size. It employs 4-in-1 pixel binning (which Samsung calls as Tetracell tech) which converts 50MP (1.2μm) to 12.5MP (2.4μm) final output. So, both sensor and pixel size are bigger, which should theoretically capture more light and result in better night time snaps.

Then there is the dual-pixel autofocus mentioned in the title, which means each pixel in the sensor houses two photodiodes. The light from these diodes along with GN1’s software algo conjures 100MP shots. Moreover, there are benefits like faster and reliable autofocus, which comes with the package.

Rest, the Samsung GN1 also sports Smart ISO functionality, gyro-based image stabilization, real-time HDR, 8K/30fps recording, and FHD video recording at 400fps (without autofocus) and 240fps (with autofocus).

Samsung ISOCELL GN1 Availability

Starting this month, Samsung ISOCELL GN1 enters mass production and you may expect it to arrive inside smartphones from Q2, 2020.
