Samsung recently launched the Galaxy S23 series, and the fans are already mesmerized by all that the brand has to offer. The high-end smartphone from the series, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, has gained a lot of attention with the inclusion of Samsung’s 200MP ISOCELL HP2 image sensor.

Undoubtedly, the 200MP primary shooter of the device is going to enhance the photography experience as compared to regular shooters available in the market. Apart from that, the sensor transforms into a 50MP sensor and a 12.5MP sensor for capturing high-quality images in low light. That said, here in this article, we will talk about the features and capabilities of the Samsung 200MP ISOCELL HP2 image sensor.

Samsung 200MP ISOCELL HP2 image sensor details

Starting with the basics, The ISOCELL HP2 ships with 200 million 0.6-micrometre pixels in a 1/1.3-inch typical format size. The sensor size is similar to what Samsung used in the previous 108MP primary smartphone shooter. As mentioned by Samsung, the camera bump of the 200MP sensor will remain the same as the 108MP sensor. Features offered in the ISOCELL HP2 sensor are as follows:

Pixel-binning for high flexibility: Offering high resolution on a compact surface requires having pretty small physical pixels. Now, this is not appropriate for higher ISO values and other cases. Nonetheless, it is quite different with new smartphones and the high-focus computational side of image capture. With the HP2 sensor, Samsung introduced its pixel-binning tech named Tetra pixel.

The Tetra pixel technology of Samsung adds high versatility to the camera by simulating different pixel sizes to accommodate varying lighting levels. As soon as the sensor identifies low-light levels, the camera transitions into one of the two pixel-binned modes, including the 50MP image sensor or the 12.5MP image sensor.

8K video recording up to 30fps: The Tetra-pixel technology offered in the ISOCELL HP2 image sensor allows it to record video in 8K resolution. In the previous sensors, we got to see a large crop while filming 8K videos. However, Samsung has solved this problem in the latest offering as the ISOCELL HP2 can capture videos up to 30 fps at 33MP central area via the binned 50MP mode. This will result in reduced cropping and an increased field of view.

Overexposure protection, Auto-focus and HDR: Samsung claims that the pictures clicked by the ISOCELL HP2 sensor will not have washed-out pictures in bright environments, which is an issue that users face with most of the sensors. This has been made possible with Samsung’s new Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG) technology.

Furthermore, the HP2 sensor will offer enhanced autofocus in low-lit environments with the tech named QPD. The same lets the sensor utilize the pixels for focusing agents. The appropriate amount of focusing agents combined by four adjacent pixels to recognize both horizontal and vertical pattern change for more accurate and faster auto-focus.

When it comes to HDR, the 50MP binned mode will get Samsung’s DSG tech that uses two different conversion values as a result of the analog signal received at the pixel level. Additionally, the Smart-ISO Pro, an HDR solution that integrates different USO-level readouts from a single exposure, lets the sensor capture 12.5MP images and 4K 60FPS videos in HDR.
