It’s been only a month since Snapdragon 888 Plus launched, but now we are hearing about the possible 2022 successor to it called Snapdragon 898. This conflicts with earlier reports of Snapdragon 895 as the name of Qualcomm’s flagship for next year. Also, it shares details about the core setup and performance we could expect.

The leak comes from reputed leaker Ice Universe who claims Qualcomm’s next-in-line chip for 2022 to be christened Snapdragon 898 and that it could run at 3.09GHz max clock speed.

Now that’s not just more than Snapdragon 888 Plus’s 2.995GHz mark, but if true, will be a big leap for peak processing speeds.

If you’re wondering, but how? Well, the probable answer is the use of Arm’s Cortex-X2 as the primary core in this chip. This is a sequel to the current Cortex-X1 that was announced in May. It is based on 64-bit Armv9 architecture, built on a 4nm process node, and promises a 16% speed jump over the X1 core (keeping the node and frequency the same). Also, note that Arm has 2x machine learning (ML) capabilities over the precursor.

Coming back to Snapdragon 898, it is too early to tell whether the chip would be employing other Armv9 cores such as Cortex-A710 for high-performance tasks and Cortex-A510 for low-performance chores. If that’s the case, you could also expect a new Adreno GPU and Hexagon DSP, among other things.

In another leak, we had seen alleged Geekbench scores of SD895 (could be SD898 too) around 1,250 for single-core and 4,000 for multi-core. Although, we can’t be sure if it’s correct, but seems promising for sure.
