TL; DR (tap to expand)
  • Tipster Digital Chat Station claims the OPPO Find X10 Ultra will use a much larger 1/1.95-inch sensor for its 10X periscope camera.
  • The current Find X9 Ultra uses a 1/2.75-inch sensor for its 10X telephoto camera, making this a substantial hardware upgrade.
  • The Find X10 Ultra is also rumored to feature a triple 200MP rear camera setup and a 100MP selfie camera.

The OPPO Find X9 Ultra (review) only recently made its global debut, bringing one of the most ambitious camera systems we’ve seen on a smartphone. One of its biggest highlights was the dedicated 10X optical periscope camera, a feature that set it apart from most flagship rivals that continue to stop at 3.5X, 5X or 6X zoom. Now, details about its successor have already started emerging.

OPPO Find X10 Ultra’s 10X Periscope to Feature a 1/1.95-inch Sensor

According to Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo, OPPO is preparing a major hardware upgrade for the Find X10 Ultra’s 10x telephoto camera. The tipster claims that the phone will use a 1/1.95-inch sensor behind its 10X periscope lens.

For comparison, the current Find X9 Ultra uses a 50MP 10X periscope camera with a 1/2.75-inch sensor and an f/3.5 aperture. Moving from a 1/2.75-inch sensor to a 1/1.95-inch sensor would be a substantial increase in sensor area.

Based on crop factors, a 1/2.75-inch sensor has an approximate crop factor of 6.6X, while a 1/1.95-inch sensor comes in at around 5.3X. Assuming OPPO retains a similar aperture, the larger sensor could gather roughly 55% more light than the current implementation. That should massively improve image quality in challenging lighting conditions, particularly when shooting at zoom levels beyond 20X.

Accommodating such a large sensor behind a 10X optical zoom system will likely require significant engineering work. The larger hardware could result in an even bigger camera module than the one found on the Find X9 Ultra. OPPO may also further refine its multi-prism periscope architecture to make the design possible.

Previous leaks suggest the Find X10 Ultra will feature an aggressive camera setup consisting of a 200MP primary camera, a 200MP ultra-wide camera, and a 200MP 3X telephoto camera.

OPPO is also apparently planning to equip the entire Find X10 series with a 100MP front-facing camera. The lineup is expected to include the Find X10, Find X10 Pro, Find X10 Pro Max, and Find X10 Ultra.

That said, the Find X10 Ultra is still several months away from launch, so there’s plenty of time for OPPO to make changes to the hardware. We should hear more about the company’s next-generation camera system in the coming months.
