OpenAI, maker of the popular AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT, could launch its search engine soon. Apparently, the company has purchased a new domain, which indicates that it might be gearing up to compete with Google, the search giant. Although this is not the first time we’ve heard about a ChatGPT-powered search engine, an AI influencer has predicted May 9, 2024, as its launch date.

Registered Domain Hints At An Imminent Launch Of ChatGPT Search Engine

According to Y Combinator’s Hacker News community post, the domain registered for the ChatGPT Search Engine is “search.chatgpt.com.” Although the address currently displays an error, insiders speculate it belongs to OpenAI’s search engine. If the reports are accurate, the new product could take away a significant market share from the current leader, Google.

It is important to mention that OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, was the former president of Y Combinator, a venture capital firm. Although it adds to the credibility of the information, we haven’t heard enough about how the ChatGPT Search Engine will work and differentiate itself from Google. However, we have a few thoughts about how it could function.

ChatGPT Search Engine: How Might It Function?

Typical interactions with ChatGPT (or Google’s Gemini, for that matter) include a user visiting its website, typing a query, and getting a relevant answer. Since the tool doesn’t showcase advertisements or related links (which might distract the user), it becomes an excellent alternative for a regular Google search.

On the other hand, Google allows users to look at various search results (and the publishers), which helps them seek the required answer. ChatGPT Search Engine could combine the pros of both tools to give users the best of both worlds. For instance, it could provide AI-generated responses with links to relevant web pages and search results.

Expect Something Similar To Google’s Search Generative Experience Or Perplexity AI

We’ve seen something like this with Google’s Search Generative Experience, which displays a summary of the user’s query and links to visit the sources. However, the feature still remains under testing. Another example of how the ChatGPT Search Engine could function is Perplexity AI. When users type a query on the too, it provides links to some relevant articles at the top, following with its answer.

Fundamentally, the ChatGPT Search Engine could work like the two examples mentioned above. However, to differentiate its product from the competition and gather more audience, OpenAI could sprinkle a few additions here and there. For instance, it could provide access to GPT-4.0 via the search engine (which is only available to paid users otherwise).

ChatGPT Search Engine: Potential Release Date

Pete Huang, an AI enthusiast and influencer, has claimed that the ChatGPT Search Engine could debut as soon as May 9, 2024. This could be an attempt to get ahead of Google before the I/) 2024 event, which will take place on May 14, 2024. Currently, Google holds 90 percent of the search market, followed by Microsoft Bing. With its search engine’s launch, OpenAI aims to take away from that chunk.

What Else Do We Know About The ChatGPT Search Engine?

Well, since it’s a search engine, it’s natural for OpenAI to explore monetization avenues. In other words, we could see advertisements for the new tool, which would be a new source of income for the company. This is also why we think it might not shy away from deploying the latest GPT tech to generate accurate answers.

Second, reports suggest that ChatGPT Search Engine’s user interface could adapt to different devices. For instance, the tool could showcase AI summaries and search results side-by-side on desktops, whereas, on mobiles, it could display them sequentially. More details about the AI-powered search engine should appear soon on the internet.
