Earlier this month, reports about OpenAI working on a ChatGPT Search Engine surfaced online. A registered domain name hinted toward a search engine in the making that would leverage the power of ChatGPT in the interface of a search engine. Smartprix also added how the tool could look and function like Google’s Search Generative Experience. However, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has denied the reports about working on a ChatGPT Search Engine.

Instead, the company has something else in store for us. On May 10, Altman took to his official X (formerly known as Twitter) account to announce that OpenAI has been working on something else entirely. “Not GPT-5, not a search engine, but we’ve been hard at work on some new stuff we think people will love,” he wrote in his tweet. While that means we won’t get to see what GPT-5 and a new ChatGPT-powered search engine are capable of, we will see something else, a new product, perhaps.

What To Expect From OpenAI’s ChatGPT Event?
Today, OpenAI will host the “Spring Update” event at 10:30 PM IST (as confirmed by Altman in his tweet that denies the development of a search engine). The CEO says the company will announce magic-like features. Although he doesn’t confirm what those features are, we’re expecting OpenAI to enable ChatGPT access to web pages, which could significantly improve the chatbot’s accuracy (especially since its current database is limited to December 2023).
According to a report by The Information, the new tool is partly powered by Microsoft’s Bing (the company is a major investor in OpenAI). Moreover, the new tool should help OpenAI bolster its position as the AI leader, particularly after immense competition from one of the most well-funded companies on the planet, Google. Speaking of which, Google will also host the I/O 2024 event hours after OpenAI reveals the new magic-like tool.
