The internet is buzzing, the social media networks are filled with posts about Sam Altman, the brain behind OpenAI and chatbots like ChatGPT and GPT-4, who was fired from OpenAI abruptly and on Google Meet considered as a major shake-up for the tech industry.
OpenAI’s Sam Altman Fired Abruptly
Fired by the board of directors, Sam’s departure was confirmed after a blog post from OpenAI came through and soon, Sam’s post on X (formerly Twitter) bursted with comments regarding the move. The company says that Altman’s departure underwent a deliberative review process by the board after which, Altman was relieved from his services after the board found him inconsistent with his communications with the board about the responsibilities he was exercising at OpenAI.
Soon after Altman’s departure, OpenAI appointed Mira Murati, Chiefs Technology Office at OpenAI, as interim CEO until it settles from a credible replacement for a $90Bn tech giant that has revolutionized how we get things done on the internet using the ever-popular ChatGPT chatbots.
Altman’s post on X saw a flurry of reactions from all around the world. Eric Shmidt, the former Google CEO, tagged Altman as a ‘hero’. Soon after Altman’s departure, Gred Brockman, CEO and co-founder at OpenAI along with Altman and Elon Musk broke the news that he too is leaving the company after the board decided to remove him from the board of directors by chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, also a board member.
Greg noted how the events unfolded right from how Altman was asked to join a Google Meet to how he got sacked and how Greg Greg was notified about the same soon after. Soon, Greg penned a letter to OpenAI quitting the company after a glorious 8 years working with talented people.
For the unversed, Sam Altman has been the face of OpenAI as the company took the world by storm unleashing the current AI arms race with the most popular AI chatbot ChatGPT. Bill Gates’ Microsoft has invested billions in Open AI as it looks forward to innovating in this era of AI.
Altman is currently the biggest shareholder in Humane, the company behind wireless and screen-less Humane AI Pin. He has been serving as a co-chair along with Tesla’s Elon Musk who left the company in 2018.
The remaining members of OpenAI’s board consist of Adam D’Angelo (Quora CEO), Heleon Toner (Director of strategy at Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology), Tasha McCauley (former CEO of GEOSim System), and Ilya Sutskever (chief scientist at OpenAI).
