It is to be noted that the benchmark scores of the new OnePlus 5 managed to generate quite a buzz, topping the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus as well as Google Pixel XL.

According to XDA-Developers, the review unit that they received featured a mechanism that maximizes its performance in the benchmark apps, something that it said is likely to affect all other review units, resulting in misleading data pertaining to the phone.

The team there has found that the new OnePlus flagship has managed to get one of the top GeekBench 4 scores for Snapdragon 835-totting devices simply because all the little cores are being kept at the same 1.9GHz frequency.

Further, the team says that similar apps like AnTuTu, Androbench, GFXBench, Quadrant, NenaMark 2 and Vellamo are also affected. This is the same set of apps that the OnePlus 3 and 3T were also found to be tampering with.

When the team tested the phone without the cheating mechanism, it was found that only 24.4% of readings returned the maximum frequency of 1.9 GHz, whereas, with it the figure was 95%.

The difference, it added, is notable only in multi-core testings, which is something that most people refer to.

In reply OnePlus released an official statement, in which it said, “People use benchmark apps in order to ascertain the performance of their device, and we want users to see the true performance of the OnePlus 5. Therefore, we have allowed benchmark apps to run in a state similar to daily usage, including the running of resource intensive apps and games. Additionally, when launching apps the OnePlus 5 runs at a similar state in order to increase the speed in which apps open. We are not overclocking the device, rather we are displaying the performance potential of the OnePlus 5.”
