WhatsApp currently has more than 3 billion people on board and it is constantly trying to get new signups. Although it supports text, voice, and video calls, one tricky situation is when you want to make calls to a random number just once like a cab driver or delivery guy. Turns out WhatsApp is currently testing out an in-app dialer app that lets you do just that and quicker.

For the unversed (as if no one knows about it), WhatsApp users earlier had to save a number to text them let alone call. Today, you can simply send yourself or someone a number, tap on it, and chat or call them. There’s an alternative i.e. you can add the contact within the app and then call them. However, all these steps have a certain degree of resistance given the few steps required to call a random person, right?

With that, WhatsApp is testing out a feature for WhatsApp v2.24.9.28 for Android that has an in-app dialer app. If that rolls out, this will be the first time WhatsApp will roll out such a feature that lets you dial a number and make calls without any additional steps.

This potential feature will make WhatsApp calling (voice and video) much easier for all your temporary or one-time requirements. It includes calling for deliveries, quick inquiries, business discussions, and beyond. Having an in-app dialer also means you don’t need to find a contact (if saved) since you can simply put their numbers and call. It remains to be seen if WhatsApp will auto-populate saved numbers when you edit a few digits similar to phone dialer apps we have on Android devices.

The feature is currently under development and given the nature, it remains to be seen if it rolls out or not. If it does, we expect the rollout to be in a phased manner i.e. a small number of people in a specific country before it eventually rolls out to other parts of the world. There’s also a slim chance that this feature may not roll out if the instant messaging app finds it not suitable or feasible at the moment. The folks at WABetaInfo have shared the screenshot of the dialer app as found on WhatsApp beta v2.24.9.28 for Android.
