TRAI Revises Rules for Mobile Number Portability, Applicable from 16 December 2019

Starting today, mobile number portability will take place in a course of mere 4 working days. Earlier this used to consume around 15 days. So, the portability will get done quickly, which is good news for users. Besides this, a few more changes have been made. Here are the new and updated rules of the TRAI for the Mobile Number Portability Process.

TRAI conditions for Mobile Number Portability

Needless to say, your number must be eligible for portability. This depends upon certain conditions.

TRAI in its public release states the terms and conditions, following which the Unique Porting Code (UPC) will be generated –

  • In the case of Post-Paid mobile connection, the subscriber has cleared ‘Outstanding dues’ towards the existing telecom service provider for the issued bill(s) as per the normal billing cycle.
  • Activation in the present operator’s network is not less than 90 days.
  • Request for change of ownership of mobile number is not in process.
  • There are no pending contractual obligation(s) to be fulfilled by the subscriber as
per the exit clause provided in the subscriber agreement.
  • The porting of the mobile number is not prohibited by the court of law.
  • The mobile number sought to be ported is not sub-judice.

Once the UPC is issued and porting request is submitted within the validity period, Individual subscribers can stay assured as now their request won’t be dropped. However, in the case of corporate users, the request will be passed to the donor operator in lieu of verification of the authorization letter submitted by the corporate entity.

Further, if you’re porting within the same circle, it will be carried out within three working days. On the other hand, if you’re porting for another circle, the process will consume up to five days.

Do note that the telecom regulator levies a transaction fee of Rs. 6.46 for the performance of the porting request.
