Reliance JioPhone received a blockbuster response with more than 10 million units pre-booked in no time in the first round. The hybrid 4G VoLTE phone’s second round of bookings is yet to kick start and reports have it that Mukesh Ambani is leaning towards an Android phone instead.

The JioPhone which entered the Indian market with the tagline “India Ka SmartPhone” instantly become a mass puller thanks to its ‘effective price of Rs. 0’. Earlier there were some reports claiming that the second round of JioPhone bookings once again will start post-Diwali, however, there is still no official information on when bookings will open again.

According to FactorDaily, Reliance Jio has halted JioPhone production as is deciding on a possible Android-based Phone. “There are not enough apps compatible with KaiOS but people are working on developing special versions for the JioPhone,” stated the publication quoting a company insider.

In its report, the publication claimed that Jio is in talks with Facebook and Google to develop their apps for JioPhone. At present, JioPhone comes out of the box running on KaiOS and doesn’t have support for popular third-party apps. Even popular instant messaging app, WhatsApp, is not supported on KaiOS which might be another reason why Jio wants to opt for Android.

Currently, KaiOS based JioPhone comes loaded with networks own JioTV, JioMusic, Jio Money and JioChat apps. Unlike Play store, which offers millions of apps to download, JioStore only has a handful of apps to offer. If Jio manages to join Android party, it will manage to further dent incumbent operators with its banquette of services.
