JSW MG Motor India is gearing up for what could be one of its most significant product reveals yet. The company has officially confirmed that it will unveil a new energy vehicle on July 16, and while official specifications are still under wraps, all signs point to a rebadged version of the Wuling Starlight 560 plug-in hybrid SUV.  A design patent for this very model was already filed in India back in March, and industry chatter has it internally codenamed “520.” Several spy shots of a camouflaged SUV have also been said to be of the upcoming MG Hybrid.

If this turns out to be the case, MG will be entering a segment in India that currently has no mainstream, mass-market competitor. A full plug-in hybrid SUV, as opposed to the strong hybrids and mild hybrids that have slowly been gaining traction. This fact alone makes the July 16 reveal worth paying attention to.

Upcoming MG Hybrid SUV – What To Expect

Reports suggest that the upcoming JSW MG Motors SUV will be based on the Wuling Starlight 560, which is also sold as the Wuling Eksion in markets like Indonesia. The car comes with a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing around 104-105bhp and 130Nm of torque, working in tandem with an electric motor on the front axle. Together, the combined system puts out roughly 195bhp of power and 230Nm of torque, a healthy figure for a family SUV.

The Wuling SUV can sprint from 0-100kph in around 9.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 170kph. The real story, though, is the range. The PHEV variant uses a 20.5kWh battery pack that’s good for roughly 100-125km of pure electric driving, depending on which international market’s figures you go by. Combine that with the petrol engine, and total range comfortably crosses the 1,000 kilometers mark, a genuinely useful number for Indian buyers who often deal with long highway stretches and inconsistent charging infrastructure.

Size And Design

The Wuling Starlight 560 is a proper three-row SUV, measuring 4,745mm in length, 1,850mm in width, and 1,755mm in height, with a generous 2,810mm wheelbase. Those dimensions place it firmly in the same bracket as the Mahindra XUV 7XO, and it’s widely expected to go head-to-head with the XUV 7XO or the Tata Safari once launched.

Design-wise, expect an upright stance with a bold front fascia. The Starlight 560 PHEV gets a large, mostly blacked-out grille, while the rumoured electric variant could get a smoother, blanked-off panel instead, typical of EVs that don’t need as much cooling airflow. Both versions are expected to share sleek dual-projector LED headlamps with twin LED daytime running strips, a rugged-looking front bumper with a faux skid plate, and 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels. At the rear, expect wraparound LED tail-lights, a clean all-black bumper, and a roof-mounted spoiler rounding off the SUV silhouette.

Inside The Cabin

The interior is expected to carry over MG’s increasingly minimalist design language, built around a dual-tone colour scheme. A 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system anchors the dashboard, paired with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a two-spoke steering wheel housing controls for infotainment and cruise functions.

Other expected features include a panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control with rear vents, powered and ventilated front seats, a wireless phone charger, and a 6-speaker sound system. On the safety side, look out for six airbags, a tyre pressure monitoring system, hill-hold assist, an electronic parking brake, and a full ADAS suite. All features that would put this SUV firmly in contention against more established players in the segment.
