On September 12, Apple announced the much-anticipated iPhone 15 series coupled with a USB-C port for the first time. Well, it wasn’t a surprising bit since we have been hearing it for ages, however, what was surprising is how Apple packed the USB-C port with no additional capabilities except charging and data transfer. At least that was what was conveyed during the Wonderlust 2023 keynote but things are a bit different as we hear it after the event’s conclusion.

According to Macotakara, the iPhone 15’s USB-C port is capable of charging the vanilla iPhone 15 in two hours from 0 to 100% pegged at 20W fast charging that can be further extended to 27W. For the unversed, this is the same as the iPhone 14 series that came with the same 20W native and 27W extended fast charging support.

However, what changed is the output power. The USB 3 Type-C is capable of outputting at 4.5W allowing all the accessories and more to charge faster and connect better. The Lightning port used till the iPhone 14 series managed only 0.3W output power which means the USB Type-C has improved the output wattage by more than a dozen times.

However, what does that mean for the users? Is that what comes to your mind when I say USB-C on iPhone 15 is capable of 4.5W output power? Let’s take a quick dive as to how the increased output wattage will benefit the users.

The 4.5W output power on the iPhone 15’s USB-C port should be able to power more things than before. We are talking about USB Type-C storage drives that can be plugged into the iPhone 15 directly without needing an intermediary such as a Mac. AirPods, headphones, and other accessories that you can pair with iPhone 15’s reverse charging will manage to charge faster. Moreover, you should be able to connect more devices directly to your iPhone 15.

Having a USB 3 Type-C on the iPhone 15 Pro series means increased data transport speeds of up to 10Gbps. Call that a rather massive upgrade and you won’t be wrong. As the entire iPhone 15 series has arrived with USB-C ports, we should be able to see how significant the impact is once the iPhones start arriving in the market starting September 22nd.
