TL;DR
- From team Hyundai, it is Creta that has been given the challenge of driving the brand’s foray into the segment.
- Reports suggest that Caren EV will be based on the facelifted version of the vehicle due for a launch in mid-2025.
While Hyundai had already set a firm foot in the Indian market, Kia has been able to position itself as a premium yet affordable offering as well. However, with the rise in popularity of EV vehicles, both brands are planning to unveil their first-ever electric cars in the country.
From team Hyundai, it is Creta that has been given the challenge of driving the brand’s foray into the segment. On the other hand, Kia has chosen its value-for-money Carens MPV for the task. The electric versions of these vehicles are already being tested in the country and should be available by 2026.

Why Did Hyundai Choose Creta To Foray Into The EV Segment?

Over the years, Creta has created a name for itself in the market. The vehicle is known for providing an all-round driving experience with multiple engine and transmission options. Creta has consistently held its spot in the list of top-selling cars, otherwise dominated by Maruti Suzuki. Hence, developing an EV with the same form factor and silhouette could help Hyundai to place itself well in the market.
As seen in the recent spy shots, the Hyundai Creta EV could feature new aerodynamic alloy wheels that will reduce drag while cruising at high speeds. On the front, the EV model will look similar to the newly-launched facelifted version with connected lights, but there could be some changes in the bumper and grills to differentiate it. Even the side and the rear profile of the EV version will be similar to the ICE version.

Creta EV Could Feature A Three-Spoke Steering And Better Ambient Lighting
The Hyundai Creta EV could debut with a three-spoke steering wheel. Further, customers should expect to see new interior themes with better ambient lighting. However, the electronic SUV will borrow most of its components from the ICE version, including the instrument cluster, infotainment screen, front-ventilated seats, and electronic parking brakes.
Given that the recently-launched Tata Curvv EV already claims to provide a real-world range of around 400 to 450 kilometers, Hyundai must match the numbers to stay relevant. We can see two battery pack options with the Creta EV, one that provides a lesser range and the other with slightly more power and increased range.

To Avoid Competition With Creta EV, Kia Has Decided To Launch Carens EV

Kia could have launched the Seltos in an EV version, but that would compete directly with the Creta EV. Hence, the Hyundai-subsidiary will rely on Carens to enter the EV segment. Further, there aren’t any affordable electric MPVs in the country, which should give the Carens EV the first-mover advantage.
Reports suggest that Caren EV will be based on the facelifted version of the vehicle due for a launch in mid-2025. While test vehicles have been heavily camouflaged, rumors about a new suspension (to offset the battery pack’s weight) and six- and seven-seater options (similar to BYD eMAX 7) have been circulating on the internet.
