American car maker Ford which is known for its wide range of offerings is once again in the headline for all good reasons. It has been reported that the carmaker is working on a 4-door model of the infamous Mustang. As per the report, the company is planning to bring a new range of “authentic” combustion-engine variants, but there are no words on the actual launch date. This would be the first Mustang in the history of Ford that comes with 4-doors.
4-Door Mustang
At a recent Goodwood Members’ Meeting, Ford CEO Jim Farley confirmed that the Ford Mustang is one of the best-selling cars for the company and it has gained a huge fan base across the globe. However, he did admit that fans would only embrace new derivatives if they delivered the same “performance and attitude” as the current models.
“We will never build a Mustang that isn’t a Mustang, for instance, there will never be room for a small, two-row Ford SUV with a Mustang badge stuck on it. But could we do other Mustang body forms – a 4-door or whatever? I believe we could, as long as these models have all the performance and attitude of the original,” said Farley.
Farley stated that Ford has to make the classic Mustang more desirable to diversify its offerings. He said the company should continue to invest in models that keep the coupe affordable for traditional customers but also invest in offerings that move the coupe upmarket. Because of keeping the low-end offerings affordable, Farley said that “taking weight out is the ticket” for enhancing performance and also pointed out that a development program for that is already underway.
In 2016, Ford brought the sixth-gen Mustang to India, where it was sold as the hard-top GT coupe. The model sold in India was equipped with a 5.0-liter V8 engine that produces 401hp and 515 Nm of torque. The Mustang sold in the country was a completely built unit and was offered from 2016 to 2020. Ford stopped its operations in India in 2021, but now the brand plans to re-enter the Indian market with the Everest SUV.
