We are still almost ten months away from the iPhone 16 series launch. However, it isn’t stopping reports from revealing various details about the series. The latest to hit the market via MacRumors suggests Apple is planning to introduce an Action Button across the whole iPhone 16 lineup.
For the unversed, the Action Button is a mechanical switch that replaced the Silent button on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. It is a configuration with at least ten functions available for you to choose from. As said, the button made it to the Pro series leaving iPhone 15 and 15 Plus wanting for more. Turns out the iPhone 16 series could be a bit different as there’s ample evidence Apple is planning on integrating the Action button across the range – iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max (or Ultra).
Having an Action button instead of a mute slider/switch allows iPhone users to do just about anything. You can configure the button to trigger the silent or normal mode or use it to turn on the flashlight. You can use it to start or stop voice memos, translate from the supported languages, and much more.
The entire iPhone 16 series will gain these capabilities if the publications are to be believed. Previous hardware configurations and prototypes at earlier development stages had included an Action button in the design along with non-action button models as a fallback in case things don’t end up as planned.
Action Button Will Be Capacitive Instead of Mechanical
Yep, another update stays the iPhone 16 series Action Button won’t follow the footsteps of their predecessors. Instead, they will be capacitive much like the Touch ID Home buttons on previous iPhone models. It will have a force sensor and haptic sensors to communicate stimuli and responses. They will have a ‘tact-switching functionality’ too although we aren’t yet aware of what it entails.
Capture Button Reportedly In the Works
If that’s not all, the iPhone 16 series will introduce a new capacitive button called the ‘Capture Button’. Dubbed Project Atlas, it will have both force sensor and tact-switching functionality much like the next-gen Action Button. Turns out we aren’t aware of what purpose the Capture button serves although some say it will replace the power button. I would say it could be an actual photo capture button and thus, the name. However, it remains to be seen where we end up with the iPhone 16 series.
Apple is likely to introduce the Action button to its fourth-gen and affordable iPhone SE 4 sometime in 2025 possibly eliminating the traces of mute switch. We have been covering information on the iPhone 16 series for a while you can read and follow us for more updates.
