Apple has fallen further behind in its multibillion-dollar effort to reduce reliance on Qualcomm for its modems. The company wants to develop in-house 5G modems for its iPhones. However, it is still to replace a complex component in Qualcomm’s modems (via Bloomberg), which allow the iPhones to connect to cellular networks and make calls or browse the internet. The component enables a mobile phone to connect with hundreds of carriers worldwide.

What’s The Issue With Apple’s In-House Modem?

Previously, Apple delayed a plan to equip its iPhones with modems by 2024. Now, it looks like the company won’t be able to achieve the required by the spring of 2025. The final year of Apple’s contract with Qualcomm is 2026. Hence, hopefully, Apple will have a modem ready for its iPhones by then.

The Bloomberg report also mentions that thousands of Apple employees have been working on the project for five years, and even so, the company hasn’t come up with the required solution. Based on the current state of development, Apple has yet to catch up to Qualcomm’s technology, let alone surpass it to achieve higher download speeds.

In another development, Apple is actively working on a graphene thermal system for the iPhone 16 series. Recently, users reported several heating issues with the iPhone 15 series, stating that the phone heats quite a lot during charging and under heavy workloads. Some users have even reported that their iPhones are heating up even when they aren’t using them. Although the iPhone 15 series is equipped with a copper heat sink, it doesn’t seem to be adequately effective.

Along with the new graphene thermal system, the upcoming iPhones could also have metal shell batteries for better heat dissipation. This information comes from an X (formerly known as Twitter) user. However, readers should still take this with a pinch of salt, as the iPhone 16 is expected to arrive in the second half of 2024.
