India’s passenger vehicle market kept its growth trajectory in June 2026, with most manufacturers recording year-on-year gains. However, a month-on-month slowdown was visible across several brands — typical for this time of year as the monsoon begins to weigh on showroom footfall. The bigger stories this month came from within the rankings: a razor-thin battle for second place between Tata Motors and Mahindra, and a notable dip for Hyundai caused by circumstances outside its control.
Maruti Suzuki — 1,47,187 Units

Maruti Suzuki continued to do what it does every month — dominate. The country’s largest carmaker sold 1,47,187 passenger vehicles in June, more than double the volume of the second-placed brand. Its utility vehicle portfolio which includes the Brezza, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Ertiga, XL6, Jimny, Invicto, Victoris, and e Vitara contributed 61,726 units to the total, while the small car range including the Alto, S-Presso, Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Swift, and Wagon R accounted for 75,231 units. Despite a month-on-month drop of nearly 23 percent — likely seasonal — the YoY growth of 23.78 percent shows the brand’s overall momentum is firmly intact.

Tata Motors — 62,076 Units

The headline number from Tata Motors is its year-on-year growth figure: 67.40 percent, the highest of any carmaker in the market this month. The company sold 62,076 units in June, retaining second place in the domestic passenger vehicle rankings — but only just. Mahindra was 1,683 units behind, making this one of the tighter monthly finishes between the two brands in recent times.
June was also an eventful month for Tata on the product and pricing fronts. The company launched the Sierra EV, adding an all-wheel-drive electric SUV to its growing EV portfolio, and announced a price increase of up to 1.5 percent across both its ICE and EV range, effective July 1.

Mahindra — 60,393 Units

Mahindra continued to close the gap on Tata, posting 60,393 unit sales in June — a 27.66 percent increase over the same month last year. The brand’s SUV portfolio remains one of the strongest in the country, with the Scorpio-N, Thar, XUV 3XO, and XUV 7XO collectively driving volumes. Month-on-month, Mahindra grew 4.09 percent, suggesting it is maintaining momentum even through a seasonally softer period. The Tata vs Mahindra contest for second place is showing no signs of easing up.
Hyundai — 39,635 Units

Hyundai is the only brand in the top five that posted a year-on-year decline, slipping 9.97 percent to 39,635 units in June. The company attributed the shortfall to a fire at one of its supplier manufacturing facilities, which resulted in a production loss of approximately 13,900 units during the month. Absent that disruption, Hyundai’s numbers would have looked considerably different. Volume leaders for the brand remained the Creta, Venue, and Exter, supported by steady demand for hatchbacks like the Grand i10 Nios and i20.

Toyota sold 28,441 vehicles in the domestic market in June, retaining fifth place with a 7.52 percent year-on-year increase. The Innova Hycross, Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Glanza continue to anchor its monthly volumes. Looking ahead, Toyota is expected to introduce the ninth-generation Hilux pickup truck in India in July.
Kia — 24,552 Units

Kia posted 24,552 unit sales in June, up 19.04 percent year-on-year. The Seltos and Sonet remained the primary volume drivers, with the Carens Clavis and Syros providing additional support. The month also saw Kia introduce a Battery-as-a-Service programme for the Carens Clavis EV, a move aimed at reducing the upfront cost barrier for EV buyers.
MG Motor — 7,568 Units

JSW MG Motor recorded sales of 7,568 units in June, up 29.83 percent year-on-year — the month’s second-highest growth rate after Tata Motors. The Windsor EV, Comet EV, and Hector continued to lead volumes. The brand is set to unveil a new plug-in hybrid SUV on July 16, expected to be based on the Wuling Starlight 560 PHEV.

On the product front, Renault recently introduced the Kiger Evolution+ Turbo variant and is set to launch the Kwid facelift on July 3.
Nissan — 3,006 Units

Nissan closed out its fourth consecutive month of year-on-year growth, with June sales rising 42.67 percent to 3,006 units. The brand credited ongoing demand for the Magnite and the recently launched Gravite for the performance. Nissan is also preparing for a global reveal of the Tekton SUV on July 9.
