BMW has unveiled the fifth-generation X5, the most ambitious version of the SUV since its original launch in 1999. The defining story is powertrain flexibility: the new X5 is the first BMW offered in five configurations simultaneously, allowing it to run on five different fuel sources, including petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, pure electric, and hydrogen.
While the ICE version goes official in November 2026, the BEV and PHEV follow in early 2027. For now, the official Indian pricing or availability hasn’t been announced.

It measures 4,994 mm long, 2,000 mm wide, and 1,751 mm tall on a 3,035mm wheelbase, with 655 liters of boot space expanding to 1,850 liters with the rear seats folded.
The fifth-gen X5 comes with a new, more upright, and angular front end with double-X DRL signatures. There’s an illuminated kidney grille, and electrically operated door winglets that replace conventional handles. At the rear, connected tail lamps and a layered roof spoiler round out the look.
Inside, the cabin follows BMW’s Neue Klasse philosophy, with a 17.9-inch central display, BMW Panoramic Vision at the base of the windscreen, and a 3D head-up display. An optional front passenger screen is available.

BMW X5: Five Powertrains, Explained
The ICE range includes a 3.0-liter inline-six petrol engine producing 394bhp and 540Nm (0-100kmph in 5.6 seconds), and a 3.0-liter diesel engine producing 291bhp and 670Nm (6.1 seconds). Both get a 48V mild-hybrid system and an 8-speed automatic. BMW will add an M-Performance V8-powered variant later.
The PHEV, badged X5 M60e xDrive, pairs the 3.0-liter petrol engine with a 29.5kWh battery pack, which provides 103km of EV-only range and two power outputs: 482 bhp/700 Nm and 603 bhp/800 Nm.

The iX5 electric combines a 141kWh battery on an 800V architecture, with which it claims a range of 845 kilometers. With its powerful powertrain, the SUV can hit 100 kmph in just 4.6 seconds. It also supports a 460-kW DC fast charger, which can charge it from 10 to 80% in 23 minutes.
