Apple is gearing up for one of its biggest iPhone launch events in years. The date is already official: September 9, 2026. However, it’s the devices that remain a mystery for now, well, sort of. Based on several sources, we could see three new iPhones: two new iPhone 18 Pro models and an iPhone Ultra.
Beyond this, the Cupertino giant could also unveil new Apple Watches. Now, a fresh report just dropped a genuinely surprising detail about the foldable iPhone Ultra’s charging configuration.

What Gurman’s Latest Report Actually Claims
Tom’s Guide, in an exclusive conversation with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, mentioned that Apple intends to integrate MagSafe charging into its first foldable. For those catching up, MagSafe charging requires a smartphone to feature an in-built circular magnetic profile.
Similarly, the charging devices that comply with the standard should also feature the same magnetic profile. The idea is to align the smartphone and the charging device, basically the coils within them, in the perfect manner to ensure efficient wireless charging and minimal energy loss.
Now, all of this sounds quite convenient. But the problem is that cramming that hardware into a foldable chassis could be an issue. First, the foldable iPhone Ultra is said to be 4.5mm thin when unfolded. Second, it would add to the smartphone’s overall component cost.

Despite all of that, Gurman remains optimistic about MagSafe on the iPhone Ultra. He leans on one precedent. If Apple already pulled off MagSafe on the iPhone Air (review), it could, in a very real way, achieve the same engineering feat on the iPhone Ultra, especially since the company is trying to target an ultra-premium segment of the audience.
Why The Leaked Renders Tell A Different Story
Here’s where things get confusing. Dummy units and leaked renders circulating online so far haven’t shown the magnetic ring on the back panel. Now, that’s not conclusive evidence. The renders could be from an early prototype of the foldable iPhone, which might have lacked the feature.
But it’s a detail worth flagging rather than ignoring.
